Office hours [all day]

Anakin opened his office door.

And stared.

Someone had redecorated.

Anakin stomped around the office examining streamers on the ceiling and paint on the wall, then the glitter-bestrewned Farrah Fawcett poster, and finally flounced over to sit in his chair.

With its pink boa.

He waved a hand and started up his little galaxy of stars, then picked up a pen that had been decorated with feathers--all of his pens had been decorated with feathers, what the hell?--and hoped no one visited today.

Though that didn't seem very likely.

Anakin tilted his head to watch her, but didn't push it.

If she didn't want to tell him -- and a part of his heart cried at that new development -- he wasn't going to force her.

"Come in," he said instead. "Someone redecorated my office. It's very...shiny...now."

She tried not to laugh, and the result was her mouth twitching. "It's...nice. Whoever redecorated has good taste."

She held out a cup. "Coffee. I have the good stuff today, too, what with apparently looking tired and needing it."

"And possibly inhaled a full bag of Pixie Stix," Anakin countered grumpily, taking the coffee from her and moving back to his pimped-out pink chair.

"Your bruises..." he reached up to his own face to echo where they were on hers, "you look more like yourself again."

She smiled a little. "Good. I've been sick all week, so that's one less thing to worry about."

"The hangover couldn't have lasted that long," Anakin commented, looking concerned.

She winced. "No, I got some kind of bug," she said. "You know about the hangover."

He didn't want to bring up the phone call, so he just shrugged. "I heard that you and Aeryn were in Caritas," he covered lamely.

"I want to apologize for whatever I said when I called you," Rory said, already blushing. "I kind of only remember the basics."

Anakin blushed as well. "It's already forgotten," he said, sipping from his coffee.

"That's bull, but I appreciate it," she said.

He hoped so, anyway.

"Pretty sure I did," she said softly. "The gist of it, anyway."

She sipped her coffee. "So, I still look like crap, huh?"

Anakin flinched.

"I didn't say that," he replied. "You just look...stretched a little thin. Like you used to get before finals."

"Jake's missing," she said quietly.

Anakin's mouth opened and closed a few times.

"Missing?" he repeated. "Oh, l-Rory, I'm sorry. What has your research turned up?"

Because he knew her.

"Nothing useful. Mostly superficial stuff," she said, frowning. "Mac's going to be hacking stuff which is a little out of my league."

She rubbed her eyes. "I don't like not being effective."

Anakin's hand twitched in an effort not to reach out for her.

"You'll find him," he said, trying to be reassuring. "Have you ever not gotten something you want this badly?"

Rory burst out laughing.

The irony of him asking that was too much.

Anakin blinked. "Did I say something wrong?"

Rory got herself under control and replied, "Um, yes, there has been an instance or two where I didn't get something I really wanted."

"This won't be one of them," Anakin said. "I have a feeling about it."

She smiled. "I trust your feelings. Luke made me sleep last night. I think that's hereditary."

"Did he?" Anakin smiled. "I'm glad."

Something occurred to him. "He stayed over?" Cue the weird twisting feeling in his stomach.

"He's practically living there, what with me being sick and him worrying and him dragging me out of Caritas and whatnot," Rory said obliviously.

"Oh," he said in a small little voice, then pasted on his best I'm Totally Okay With This smile.
