Office hours [all day]

Anakin opened his office door.

And stared.

Someone had redecorated.

Anakin stomped around the office examining streamers on the ceiling and paint on the wall, then the glitter-bestrewned Farrah Fawcett poster, and finally flounced over to sit in his chair.

With its pink boa.

He waved a hand and started up his little galaxy of stars, then picked up a pen that had been decorated with feathers--all of his pens had been decorated with feathers, what the hell?--and hoped no one visited today.

Though that didn't seem very likely.

"I still have to show Luke those pictures," she remembered. "I gave him a big box of pictures and things of yours back in September."

"You did?" Anakin bit his lip. "This would be me apologizing again. For all of it."

She shrugged, quiet for a moment. "I was in a lot of pain those days," she finally said. "I don't like to talk about it. Grief is different on everyone, and mine hit me like a brick to the face. Telling Luke everything he wanted to know about the man his father had been made it easier."

Anakin looked stricken as he wrapped his arms around his chest to stop himself from reaching out.

"I remember the pain," he whispered in a choked little voice.

It still radiated off of her. He took at as part of his penance.

"And it resulted in me making a few choices that weren't the best ones for anyone involved." Such as one named Bridge. "I just wanted to make it go away."

She shook her head. "Anyway. Luke has all the pictures of us except for one."

Anakin blinked at the thought he could've sworn he'd heard.

He shook his head, trying to get rid of it. "Which one doesn't he have?" he asked. "Please tell me it's the cross-dressing one."

She laughed. "No, Parker helped supply him with that one."

She reached into her bag and shyly brought out a photo from her wallet.

"This one."

Anakin let out a soft "oh" before he could stop himself, then leaned in to touch the picture.

Well, the Rory side of the picture if you wanted to be specific.

"I haven't seen this in years," he said. "All of those pictures were destroyed when the Temple was razed."

"Oh," she replied. "This is the one from right before your birthday."

Like he wouldn't know.

"I remember," he said softly. "You made me wear a hat that night," he said.

Then he thought of something. "You keep that picture with you?"

She shrugged. "I have since last year."

His hand tracked up to his neck. "Other things changed," he said.

"Yes," she replied, watching him. "I showed it to Leia when she visited."

She couldn't not say something. "What other things do you mean?"

She bit her lip. "There still is. I just don't wear it."

"Yeah," Anakin said, still studying the floor. "After Bridge, you didn't need a reminder of me hanging around, huh."

"It was more that I didn't exactly need to be clinging to someone who wasn't coming back," she said. "Bridge was - it wasn't like us. It was more...." She looked for the right word. "Superficial?"

Anakin had never had a relationship that wasn't full of pain and woe.

"I don't understand," he said finally.

"We were very light. Like frosting," she said, "or whipped cream or something. We were sweet and fun and I do love him, but I've never been in love with him. He's a wonderful person - I don't expect you to buy into that - and a great friend, but we were never meant to be together. He missed Xander and I missed you and we were both trying to numb the pain with the shininess of a new relationship."

Anakin's face was completely unreadable. "But you stayed together for months," he said finally. "Didn't the...shininess...wear off?"

"...yes, and that was when we broke up," she said. She wasn't ready to outright tell him what had happened there.

"Were we that shiny?" Anakin asked shyly.

She smiled. "We were shiny even when we were driving each other crazy."

Anakin tilted forward a little more. "Some of my favorite parts were times we were driving each other insane."

Then he blushed bright red and practically hid behind his desk, coughing.

That was not how he'd wanted the conversation to go at all.
