Anakin opened his office door.

And stared.

Someone had redecorated.

Anakin stomped around the office examining streamers on the ceiling and paint on the wall, then the glitter-bestrewned Farrah Fawcett poster, and finally flounced over to sit in his chair.

With its pink boa.

He waved a hand and started up his little galaxy of stars, then picked up a pen that had been decorated with feathers--all of his pens had been decorated with feathers, what the hell?--and hoped no one visited today.

Though that didn't seem very likely.

She carefully reached for his hand. "Luke needs you to be one."

Anakin gripped her hand tightly. "He told me," he whispered. "What if I screw this up, too?"

"Screw what up? Being a Jedi? You were the best there ever was, and now you have the wisdom to back up the skill. The experience," she said softly, smoothing her thumb over his knuckles. "Or did you mean fatherhood?"

"Either," Anakin muttered. "Both. I was the worst Jedi there ever was--I destroyed a ten-thousand year tradition. I haven't made a right step since."

He glanced up at Rory, nothing of his normal cocksure manner in his eyes. "I couldn't live with myself if I ruined this, too."

"Yes, you have," she said gently. "You came back. You saved Luke. And you were legendary before you turned. I still have so many questions about that," she added, "but I won't ask until you're ready. The point is that being a dad isn't something that anyone can teach you. I can just tell you I have one man in my life who's the best father a girl could ask for, and one who remembers me when it's convenient. Try more for the former than the latter."

Anakin gave her a small smile. "More like your Luke, less like Christopher. I can do that."

Rory looked momentarily startled. "You remember my dad's name."

Anakin smiled. "Of course I do."

"You've never even met him. I wouldn't expect you to," she said shyly.

Anakin shrugged, embarrassed. "He was important to you. I remembered."

"I'd like you to meet him someday," she blurted before she thought about it.

Anakin's eyes went wide. "I'd love to," he said before she could take it back.

She blushed. "If we can tie him to a chair and keep his cell phone at least fifteen feet away, that is."

Anakin grinned. "I bet I could do that," he said. "Do you think he'll come to graduation?"

"I hadn't thought about it," Rory said honestly. "I should probably invite him. He might bring Gigi, too. I wonder if she's met Bucky."

Anakin blinked. "Rhetorical question, right?"

She shrugged. "They're not actually related, but the frequency that Dad bothers Mom means they might have met."

Anakin pressed his lips together, clearly unimpressed by Christopher's priorities. "Maybe," he said diplomatically.

"I hope I get to spend some time with her," Rory said, mildly worried. "I barely ever see my little sister. Is that weird?"

"I'm really not the person to ask," Anakin said, blushing. "I didn't know I had family for 18 years."

"Which is why you've got to make up for lost time and be a good daddy to Luke," she said softly.

"I'd say I'll try but there's a nine-hundred year old dead Jedi Master in my head yelling at me about that choice of phrase," Anakin said, giving her a shy smile. "I'll do my best to be the father I never had and hope I don't screw it up any worse than I have already."

"You'll have help," she promised quietly, giving him a little smile. "Not that I can help...be a dad, but if he comes to you with something that makes you flaily, you can always call me. Not that I know what a normal upbringing is like either, but still."

"There won't be any more chats by cliffs, for one," Anakin said ruefully.

"Well, no," she agreed. "And maybe everyone can keep their hands."
