Anakin opened his office door.

And stared.

Someone had redecorated.

Anakin stomped around the office examining streamers on the ceiling and paint on the wall, then the glitter-bestrewned Farrah Fawcett poster, and finally flounced over to sit in his chair.

With its pink boa.

He waved a hand and started up his little galaxy of stars, then picked up a pen that had been decorated with feathers--all of his pens had been decorated with feathers, what the hell?--and hoped no one visited today.

Though that didn't seem very likely.

She shrugged. "I have since last year."

His hand tracked up to his neck. "Other things changed," he said.

"Yes," she replied, watching him. "I showed it to Leia when she visited."

She couldn't not say something. "What other things do you mean?"

"There used to be a necklace," he whispered, barely loud enough to be heard.

She bit her lip. "There still is. I just don't wear it."

"Yeah," Anakin said, still studying the floor. "After Bridge, you didn't need a reminder of me hanging around, huh."

"It was more that I didn't exactly need to be clinging to someone who wasn't coming back," she said. "Bridge was - it wasn't like us. It was more...." She looked for the right word. "Superficial?"

Anakin had never had a relationship that wasn't full of pain and woe.

"I don't understand," he said finally.

"We were very light. Like frosting," she said, "or whipped cream or something. We were sweet and fun and I do love him, but I've never been in love with him. He's a wonderful person - I don't expect you to buy into that - and a great friend, but we were never meant to be together. He missed Xander and I missed you and we were both trying to numb the pain with the shininess of a new relationship."

Anakin's face was completely unreadable. "But you stayed together for months," he said finally. "Didn't the...shininess...wear off?"

"...yes, and that was when we broke up," she said. She wasn't ready to outright tell him what had happened there.

"Were we that shiny?" Anakin asked shyly.

She smiled. "We were shiny even when we were driving each other crazy."

Anakin tilted forward a little more. "Some of my favorite parts were times we were driving each other insane."

Then he blushed bright red and practically hid behind his desk, coughing.

That was not how he'd wanted the conversation to go at all.

Rory's eyes went wide. "...like when?"

Anakin's definition of insane had skewed slightly gutterward.

He blushed harder and shook his head.

Rory blinked. And then got it. "Oh. Oh."

She was now about as red as him. "I was thinking more like when you and Aeryn dumped drinks on hookers or I was refusing to sleep."

"You were cute when you were tired and babbly," Anakin said with a gentle smile.

Rory blushed so hard she thought she might combust.

"Thanks. You were cute when you were making me take naps."

"I wasn't cute, I was concerned," Anakin said.

He bit his lip. "You should take a nap now, too," he said.

"Not tired," she replied, shaking her head and taking a long sip of coffee."

Anakin raised an eyebrow. "That didn't work then. What makes you think now will be different?"

"The fact that you're not my boyfriend and have no reason to tell me what to do," she replied after a moment, locking eyes with him.

Anakin held her eyes for a long moment. "Right," he said, finally dropping his gaze. "I apologize."

What he was apologizing for wasn't entirely clear.

She nodded, mentally kicking herself for letting it get that far.

"I should go."
