Office hours [all day]

Anakin opened his office door.

And stared.

Someone had redecorated.

Anakin stomped around the office examining streamers on the ceiling and paint on the wall, then the glitter-bestrewned Farrah Fawcett poster, and finally flounced over to sit in his chair.

With its pink boa.

He waved a hand and started up his little galaxy of stars, then picked up a pen that had been decorated with feathers--all of his pens had been decorated with feathers, what the hell?--and hoped no one visited today.

Though that didn't seem very likely.

Anakin nodded. "Rose Tyler," he said, "no relation to Jaye. She's another teacher here." He smiled. "She's a lot of fun. I'm teaching her how to fly."

"You are?" Rory asked, feeling a little sick. "Oh. Wasn't she a student here before, too?"

"Yes, but not in a time-traveling way. She's a different version along the timeline," he said. He tilted his head to look at Rory. "Are you feeling all right?"

"Dandy," she said, staring down at her cup. "Is she your age, then? Your physical age, I mean."

"I think so, or close enough," Anakin said. "We haven't exactly discussed it."

"Seems awful important to you to be just skipped over," she told her coffee.

Anakin sighed. "We're not running off together," he said. "We're having coffee."

That wasn't going to exactly endear him to the one who introduced him to coffee.

Anakin got the feeling he'd done something wrong, but he didn't know what it was.

"So did you call anyone else when you were at Caritas?" he asked.

"Hamlet, Alec, Jaye, Charlie, Xander," she recited. "And Luke, of course."

"Of course," he echoed hollowly.

Bad choice of conversation topics, but he didn't want her to leave yet.

"I saw John today," he said.

"How is he?" she asked immediately.

"Not in the clinic, if you were worried," Anakin said dryly.

Oh, Rory. You are not one to criticize in this area.

Anakin opened his mouth to say that Rory wasn't one to criticize in that area, then closed it again.

Apparently that was what Luke was for these days.

"He looks better than he did in class Monday," Anakin said. "He broke his hand, though."

"He hit a wall," Rory said, because she'd heard. "You didn't hurt him."

It wasn't an accusation or a question - just an observation.

"He's beating himself up enough for both of us," Anakin said. "But if it ever happens again..." There was steel in that voice.

"I doubt very seriously that he'll ever hurt me again," she said softly. "The guilt's eating him."

Anakin let out an unamused chuckle. "Something new we have in common."

She watched him quietly. "I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you. Or at least, I wouldn't be as cognizant, probably."

Something like hope sprang into Anakin's eyes, but it disappeared quickly. "I'm glad I was there to help," he said softly.

"I'm glad you were," she agreed, putting a little emphasis on 'you.' "And maybe someday I'll go back to looking reasonably not-unattractive and stop showing up in your office looking either purple or like I'm about to pass out."

Anakin's cheeks flushed. "I wouldn't care if you showed up in a bathrobe with your hair on fire," he said. "I just like seeing you."

Rory blushed dark red. "I would rather not have fiery hair."

"I'm sure I have a bucket around here for that kind of emergency," Anakin said, ducking his head under the desk.

Then banging his head on the underside to remind himself not to be such a frelling moron.
