Office hours [all day]

Anakin opened his office door.

And stared.

Someone had redecorated.

Anakin stomped around the office examining streamers on the ceiling and paint on the wall, then the glitter-bestrewned Farrah Fawcett poster, and finally flounced over to sit in his chair.

With its pink boa.

He waved a hand and started up his little galaxy of stars, then picked up a pen that had been decorated with feathers--all of his pens had been decorated with feathers, what the hell?--and hoped no one visited today.

Though that didn't seem very likely.

Anakin opened his mouth to say that Rory wasn't one to criticize in that area, then closed it again.

Apparently that was what Luke was for these days.

"He looks better than he did in class Monday," Anakin said. "He broke his hand, though."

"He hit a wall," Rory said, because she'd heard. "You didn't hurt him."

It wasn't an accusation or a question - just an observation.

"He's beating himself up enough for both of us," Anakin said. "But if it ever happens again..." There was steel in that voice.

"I doubt very seriously that he'll ever hurt me again," she said softly. "The guilt's eating him."

Anakin let out an unamused chuckle. "Something new we have in common."

She watched him quietly. "I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you. Or at least, I wouldn't be as cognizant, probably."

Something like hope sprang into Anakin's eyes, but it disappeared quickly. "I'm glad I was there to help," he said softly.

"I'm glad you were," she agreed, putting a little emphasis on 'you.' "And maybe someday I'll go back to looking reasonably not-unattractive and stop showing up in your office looking either purple or like I'm about to pass out."

Anakin's cheeks flushed. "I wouldn't care if you showed up in a bathrobe with your hair on fire," he said. "I just like seeing you."

Rory blushed dark red. "I would rather not have fiery hair."

"I'm sure I have a bucket around here for that kind of emergency," Anakin said, ducking his head under the desk.

Then banging his head on the underside to remind himself not to be such a frelling moron.

"Are you okay?" she asked, mildly concerned.

"Fine," Anakin replied, sounding pained.

He finally came back up with a red, blotchy face.

"You don't look fine," she said, crossing over and looking concerned. "You're all blotchy." She tentatively - shyly, really - reached up and pressed the back of her hand against his cheek, and then his forehead. "I hope I didn't give you my cold."

Anakin couldn't help it. He leaned into her hand and closed his eyes.

Mostly to hide the tears that were springing into them. "I'm fine," he said quietly.

She gently traced her finger over the scar beside his right eye. "I was so...." She couldn't think of the right word, so she let him fill in his own adjective, "when I first saw you, I didn't think to ask about this. What happened?"

"Lightsaber duel on my way out of the cloning facility," Anakin said, his voice coming out way shakier than he'd prefer. "I wasn't quite as fast as I needed to be."

"Ow," she said, wincing. "Does it still hurt?"

"No," Anakin said. He smiled up at her. "I'm almost glad it's there. I had a very similar scar for years. That one came from a blaster shot."

"Ow," she repeated, moving her hand to her neck self-consciously. "Were you okay?"

"We were about two weeks from a bacta dump, so I kept the scar," Anakin said. "Obi-Wan yelled the entire time about not being a hero and learning how to duck."

"This would be one of the major reasons I always liked him," Rory said, giving Anakin a disapproving look. "Why didn't you duck?"

And then backing up a little. She hadn't realized how close they were until then.

Anakin looked disappointed for a split second, then quickly hid the expression.

"I tried," he said. "Obi-Wan's ass was in the way."

"So why didn't you push him or duck another way?" Rory asked logically.

"Because pushing him would've made him fall and ducking another way meant he would've been shot," Anakin said, muttering something under his breath that sounded like "ungrateful ducking Obi-Wan."
