Skywalker Apartment [Thursday evening]

Anakin was sitting in the middle of the living room floor trying to untangle Vladdie from a string of blinking white lights.

"I leave you alone for three seconds," he muttered, not even turning around to point straight at Bertie. "Back to the closet," he scolded. "Eating the stockings is a terrible, terrible idea."

Ah, Christmas decorating.

"Vladdie just wants to help," Rory tried from where she was sorting ornaments.

"So we can hang him from the tree like this?" Anakin teased, smiling over at her. "That'd make for a great Christmas picture. You, me, and Vladdie on the top of the tree."

He pulled too hard on something and the entire string of lights went out. "Huh."

"Hard to explain, though," she noted, laughing. "Grandma and Grandpa already had their freakout of the month."

"And what a freakout it was," Anakin said, carefully unwrapping the puppy. "I think your mom was sorry she didn't have popcorn."

"I'm glad someone enjoyed that," she said, shrugging.

Anakin gave her a soft smile. "At least it's over with?" he replied, finally getting Vladdie untangled. "It's not like they weren't going to notice you not drinking wine during the holidays."

"Well, I could always claim that I suddenly care about legality," she pointed out.

Anakin shifted aside a few boxes to sit closer to Rory. "You sorry we told them?" he asked quietly.

"I think we should have had the baby, waited oh...three or four years, and then the baby could have told them, and it might have gone over better," she replied.

Anakin grinned. "Or waited until the baby was ready to go to school?"

"The baby could go to Yale, too, and they could find out then," she decided.

"Or when the baby gets married," he teased.

"Exactly," she agreed, nodding. "See, that would have been the better plan."

"I love you," he said, leaning in to kiss her nose, "and you are very, very sneaky, but I'm not sure that would've worked."

"It would've been fine," she declared.

"Would we have had to invest in cunning disguises and wigs to hide the child until it got married?" Anakin asked. "Perhaps mustaches?"

"What if it's a girl? She might never get married if we make her wear a mustache," she replied.

"And?" Anakin replied, smiling. "She's going to be forty before she can date."

"Fair point," she agreed thoughtfully, resting her head on his shoulder. "You think they'll calm down eventually?"

He kissed the top of her head. "I'm sure of it," he said. "How else will they be able to tell us everything we're doing is wrong?"

"Good point," she sighed. "And really, it's probably best that we told them before I started really showing."

Anakin's hand drifted down to rest on her stomach. "It probably lessened the volume and duration of the yelling a bit," he said.

"Hopefully there won't be a repeat or anything," she said, resting her hand on top of his.

He smiled down at her. "I only get yelled at once," he said.

Pause.

"Usually."

"I'm pretty sure I've yelled at you more than once," she said, nodding.
