Talking with Ben was as effective as beating his head into a brick wall, Anakin reflected sourly, especially if he tried to turn the subject to what his grandson had up to while he'd been home. He'd gotten much better with a lightsaber in the intervening time, and if Anakin were a talkative man, he would have pointed out how much that worried him.

"You wished to speak with me about something?" he asked Ben as he sat down and gestured to the other remaining chair.

Shadows entered Anakin's eyes. "Another operation?"

She shook her head. "Not sure yet. I have something in mind, but the timing's not great right now." What with John leaving right after graduation and all. "But I've been slacking. There were the zombies, then the kids, then I was a kitten, and it's been too much too fast to keep up with everything here."

"What are John's plans?" Anakin asked, keeping his voice casual.

[solo_sword]

"Still up in the air," Jaina replied. "Doesn't look like he's sticking around long, though." Even if she was hopeful that Dave would maybe unclench.

"Is he heading back with you?"

Still very casual.

[solo_sword]

"That's up to him," she said, though honestly casual.

[sith_happened]

"What would you like him to decide?"

[solo_sword]

"You have to ask?" Jaina said with a raised eyebrow, and shrugged. "He needs to go with whatever's best for him. I don't know what I'm doing for sure yet, either. We'll be fine."

Anakin nodded. "If it's supposed to work out, it will," he said. "Look at me. I waited thirty years."

[solo_sword]

"I'm not going to do things quite that way," she said slowly. Also, she was pretty sure she didn't have the lifespan or the patience for thirty years.

"Good idea," Anakin said dryly. "Mine wasn't exactly a happy life."

[solo_sword]

"I've heard a thing or two about it," Jaina said, just as dryly. "I don't know. I'm just not worried about it."

[sith_happened]

"Good," Anakin said, smiling. "Stressing about something never helps."

Not that he will listen to his own advice ever.

[solo_sword]

The way she figured, there was only so much she could do when he did leave, and she wasn't planning on giving up on him, so she couldn't worry. "Oh, please, like we do anything that way."

"I've heard it's 'healthy'," Anakin said, using air quotes for added effect, then rolling his eyes.

[solo_sword]

"It is healthy. We just fail at it," Jaina said.

[sith_happened]

"Completely," Anakin said. "But avoiding is just as good."

[solo_sword]

Phrased like that, it seemed a little wrong. "I don't think we're supposed to say that part out loud."

[sith_happened]

"I've never been good at diplomacy," Anakin said. "Does John have relatives coming back in for the ceremony?"

[solo_sword]

"His brother," Jaina said. "I'm sure it will be fun."

[sith_happened]

"The tool who was here in the fall?" Anakin made a face. "Yay."

[solo_sword]

"Sounds like you're a fan."

[sith_happened]

"He didn't like you." And for Anakin, that was the end of it.

[solo_sword]

"A lot of people don't like me," Jaina said. "I'd stick more on the part where he's an oppressive jerk." She had other adjectives, but she wasn't using them in front of her grandfather.

"I don't like them, either," Anakin said, "and I can think of a few other words to describe that guy."
