Talking with Ben was as effective as beating his head into a brick wall, Anakin reflected sourly, especially if he tried to turn the subject to what his grandson had up to while he'd been home. He'd gotten much better with a lightsaber in the intervening time, and if Anakin were a talkative man, he would have pointed out how much that worried him.

"You wished to speak with me about something?" he asked Ben as he sat down and gestured to the other remaining chair.

Anakin gave her a smile. "Something like that. I'm not going to withhold affection because I don't like a decision you've made. I get the feeling that might not be the same thing for John."

"Exactly. He's got plenty of support- my parents love him- but that family's a little hard that way."

Anakin pursed his lips. "Family's not supposed to work that way," he declared.

[solo_sword]

"No one said it was right," Jaina said.

[sith_happened]

"True," Anakin said. "Doesn't mean I'm a fan of emotional blackmail to get him to do what they want."

[solo_sword]

"If it helps, it doesn't seem to really work." After all, he was still here and dating her, and volunteering as part of her military. His heart didn't seem to be in filling out college applications.

"It never works out when someone tries to choose your life," Anakin said.

[solo_sword]

"I don't know about that," Jaina said thoughtfully. "Maybe it just depends on where you want to go later. I didn't really have a choice in what I would end up doing, but it's exactly where I would have chosen to go myself." Except the Sword of the Jedi thing.

"That's because some of us have destinies," Anakin said with a wry smile.

[solo_sword]

"Name me one person who wanted their destiny," she countered.

[sith_happened]

"Before or after they figured out what it was?" Anakin replied.

[solo_sword]

Hm. "Either."

[sith_happened]

Anakin smiled. "Luke was pretty excited to be a Jedi in the beginning."

[solo_sword]

"Of course. He didn't know what he was getting into," she agreed.

[sith_happened]

"And if he had?" Anakin asked. "Think he would've stayed on Tatooine and not gotten involved?"

[solo_sword]

"No. That's not him," Jaina stated.

[sith_happened]

"And I think that's part of destiny, too," Anakin said.

[solo_sword]

Knowing it stinks and doing it anyway?"

Anakin nodded. "Force knows he'll have plenty of reasons to walk away," he said. "But it's Luke, so he won't."

[solo_sword]

"I bet you would have some really interesting talks with Professor Atreides."

[sith_happened]

"We had fun kicking the crap out of each other on Sunday," Anakin said, grinning.

[solo_sword]

"I don't know that that counts as talking," Jaina said dryly. "I had to be a kitten for it." Grumble grumble.

"And you still took Ronon on," Anakin said. Hell yeah, he was proud of her.

[solo_sword]

"Hardly," she sighed. "I really wanted to square off with him, too." Of course, she had ulterior motives.

"Any particular reason other than him being an annoying human being?"
