Skywalker Apartment [Saturday evening]

Anakin cheated and used the Force to hold up his stack of packages as he opened the door to the apartment.

It wouldn't do to have the birthday cake fall, after all.

"Rory?" he called softly as he came in. "Are you awake?"

She was, having camped herself in front of the television to watch a documentary on humpback whales while on the phone.

"No, I know, I totally see the resemblance," she was saying, waving happily to Anakin.

Anakin grinned. "I don't," he said, coming closer to kiss her.

"Mom says Kirk reminds her of one," she whispered, kissing him. "It makes sense with context."

"I'd love to know the context," he said, nudging his nose against hers, "but let me put down some stuff first, okay?" His eyes twinkled. "Some of it might even be for a birthday girl of my acquaintance."

"Presents?" Rory asked, perking up. "Mom, I have to go. There are -- yes, exactly. Byeee, love you too."

And with that, she hung up.

Anakin grinned. "I said 'might be'," he teased.

"Yeah, but I know you," Rory pointed out.

"True," Anakin said, handing her a small box. "Happy birthday."

Rory held the box for a second, beaming at him. "You didn't have to get me anything tiny and sparkly, eee."

It was a guess.

"You like things that are tiny and sparkly," Anakin said, and that was pretty much the only reason he needed to spoil her.

"I just like things that are sparkly, period," Rory pointed out, still not opening the box. She wanted to be prepared.

"In a half hour, I'll cover Vladdie in glitter and make him dance," Anakin promised.

"What's sad is that he'd probably love that," Rory sighed, finally opening the box. "Oh! Oh, my god."

"They match the necklace," Anakin pointed out. Like she might have missed that or something.

"And my ring," she added softly.

"And your ring," he said, smiling. "I'm running out of places on you to put things that sparkle."

"I could get some piercings," she teased, reaching for him. "It's beautiful, Anakin. Thank you."

"It makes you happy," he said, holding her tightly. "That's good enough for me. Besides, turning twenty is a big deal."

"It's half of forty, after all. And forty's like, ancient," she teased.

Anakin reached out to tickle her. "Be nice, or there will be no other presents," he threatened.

"More presents?" she asked hopefully, smiling at him.

"Two more," Anakin said, "unless you are counting cake a present, too."

He handed her a book-shaped package. "It's a pony," he said. "I'm really good at folding."

"Hmm. I don't see air-holes," she said worriedly.

"I gave it a scuba tank," he assured her.

"You're a really good folder, then," she noted with a grin.
