Office hours [all day]

Anakin had a bad feeling about today. He kept putting his hand on the back of his neck to rub at the hair there, certain he was being watched.

He hoped that the feeling had nothing to do with the news he had to share with Jaina, Ben, and Luke. He left ~~oh so handwavy~~ messages for them, then stared at his comlink, trying to figure out exactly how to tell Luke he was going to be a big brother.

Another nod. "How do I support them?"

"Remember that while significant battles have been won, it's by no means close to being over," Anakin said. "And the group Luke and Gavin are with are small and limited financially, going up against a galactic-wide government with enormous resources. There will be losses, but they both knew that when they signed up. Most of the beings in the galaxy are much happier ignoring the problem and waiting for someone else to take care of it. They're not that type of people."

"No, they're definitely not," Inara said, realizing that that was part of what she loved so much about about Gavin. "You should be proud."

"I am," he said, "of all of them. My family has a history of service to the galaxy, however ungrateful that galaxy might be for it."

"Galaxies are never appropriately grateful. Families with a history of dedicated service, especially under such extreme circumstances, should be valued."

"Jedi have never been in it for the fame," he said.

"Then why do they do it? It seems like a thankless job."

"Because someone has to," Anakin said. "Why would you want things to stay the same, when what it is is terrible? I couldn't stand still and watch it. Neither could Luke and Leia's mother."

"What was she like?"

Anakin's face closed up. "Brilliant, stubborn, beautiful and gone too soon."

"I'm sorry," she said, meaning it in more than one way as she rose to leave. "Thank you for taking time to speak with me. I know it couldn't have been pleasant to revisit old memories."

"Our wars aren't Jaina's war, either," he said softly. "We were fighting for a better galaxy. She's fighting for survival, period."

"Can you tell me more about the Jedi? Who they are, what they do?"

Anakin smiled. "We're when you need the firepower of a Star Destroyer but don't have the space. We were the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy."

"Does the burden ever get to be too much?"

"There's not exactly a line of people wanting to pick it up from us," Anakin said. "We deal."

"How?"

"We know what we do is important," Anakin said, "and for the really difficult days, the Force sustains us. Being a Jedi is a lifetime commitment of study to doing what is right. You don't just walk away from it."

"Nor would I expect them to. I just wanted to understand what drives--" She stopped. "I just wanted to know."

"What drives what?" Anakin asked.

"Them," she said, glancing away. "Especially Jaina, but Gavin and Luke, as well."

"Jaina's fighting for survival," Anakin said. "That focuses you."

Inara nodded, once, in acknowledgment. "That's what I didn't know."

"And time moves differently here," Anakin said. "Entire planetary systems can be lost between one day and the next. Jaina's heart and soul a soldier. Being out of the fight is unnatural to her."

"So why would she stay? If her heart and soul are there, with the fight, why would she remain here?"
