Anakin wasn't exactly asleep--he didn't sleep much these days--but his attention wasn't on the research he was doing into the Seven Deadly Sins, either.

"I don't like big parties," she said softly, watching her phone and curling up.

"I know you don't," he murmured, focusing on her eyes, "but I don't think you want to be dependent on Paris--or your grandparents' friends' grandkids--for a social life, either."

"No, but I'm not socially retarded or anything, Anakin," she sighed.

"I didn't say you were," Anakin said, trying to keep the irrational hurt out of his voice. "But if you had your way, you'd probably stay in your room for the next three years reading, right?"

"And what's so wrong with that?"

Privately, Anakin agreed. That had never stopped him from arguing before, though. "You don't want new friends?" he asked softly. "And if you don't, that's fine and I'll drop this entirely."

She shrugged. "I do, but not if I have to force it."

"Fair enough," Anakin said. "How were the rest of your classes?"

"Exhausting," she said, and she looked it. "It's shopping week."

"Shopping week?" Anakin repeated, still looking worried for her.

"We get to go to a whole bunch of classes and pick which ones we want!"

"How many have you tried out, m-- Rory?" he asked. "If it's more than ten..."

"Twenty-three."

Anakin's eyes went wide, then very narrow. "Bed time," he commanded.

"I'm in bed!" she protested.

"The part of bed time when you close your eyes," Anakin said peevishly. "Did you try every writing class at Harvard?"

"And the reading, and the journalism," she replied, smiling sleepily at wee grainy Anakin.

"Rory..." Anakin sighed, but his tone was fond. Because of course she had. "And which five are you keeping?"

Rory laughed. "Like I'd keep just five."

"You're not keeping 23," Anakin said firmly. "You'll work yourself into exhaustion before Christmas. Luke would worry."

Yes. He's totally concerned about Luke.

"No, I'm just still paring them down," she murmured, crawling under her blankets and keeping the phone close.

"Paring down doesn't mean getting to an even 20," Anakin pointed out softly. "Close your eyes."

"I know," Anakin said, keeping his voice low and soothing. "Humor me."
