Anakin wasn't exactly asleep--he didn't sleep much these days--but his attention wasn't on the research he was doing into the Seven Deadly Sins, either.

...okay, he was watching the movie with Brad Pitt in it. Don't judge.

"I know," Anakin said, keeping his voice low and soothing. "Humor me."

"'Kay," she murmured. "You should tell me a story."

Most of the stories he knew these days didn't have happy endings, but he wasn't about to disappoint Rory.

"Once upon a time," he began in the same low voice, "there was an extremely stubborn Jedi living in a galaxy far, far away before his whole world went to hell. He was stuck in an exceedingly boring reception and trying to restrain himself from calling out 'Hello, Jaye!' just to watch another Jedi jump because in addition to being incredibly stubborn, he thought he was funny."

She giggled. "That's because it is funny."

Anakin smirked at the little Rory on his comlink. "He certainly thought so," he agreed. "Anyway, the older, humorless Jedi didn't think it was and so punished the younger one by volunteering him to dance with the crotchety old bat--an actual bat, but with two left feet. And two right ones--who was throwing the reception as a token of galactic friendship."

"Poor younger, funny Jedi," she replied, still giggling sleepily.

"His life was very hard," Anakin agreed, reaching his finger out to touch her image. If she asked...well, comlink interference was a concern.

It could happen. Even on his comlink.

"So there he was in the middle of the dance floor praying that the drunken Gamorrean Senator didn't puke in his boots--again--as the older, useless Jedi was hiding in a corner trying not to laugh himself to death. Because he'd made a special dance request, you see, and his dear friend was about to do the stupidest choreography in that or any other galaxy."

"Oh no," Rory replied, hoping this wasn't going where she thought it was going.

Anakin scowled, but his eyes were twinkling. "Oh yes. Obi-Wan Kenobi introduced my galaxy to the Macarena and anyone who says what a sweet, humble, wonderful Jedi he was is a dirty liar."

Rory kept laughing. "How did he even know it?"

Anakin's blush could probably be seen even through the graininess of the transmission. "There was a lot of Jawa Juice involved," he muttered. "I never should have told him about it."

"Your own fault then," she murmured, closing her eyes again.

"Most things were," he replied, watching her carefully.

"Not everything," she replied softly, her breathing evenig out.

"You were nothing short of a miracle," he whispered, pretty sure she was already asleep.

She was, mostly. "Hmm?"

"Nothing," Anakin said quickly. "Go to sleep."

She did, leaving the phone on.

And Anakin watched her sleep until the charge of his comlink finally ran out.
