Anakin was in the office finishing up his grading.

Which meant that he was more than a little eager for a distraction.

Any distraction.

Is that for me or for everyone? Anakin asked oh-so-innocently before turning towards the Gilmores again. "It should be very educational," he said diplomatically. "We have a wide range of student cultures."

Rory's eyes went very wide and her skin flushed a very, very dark red, but she didn't say anything - verbally or otherwise.

"Are you all right, Rory?" Richard asked. "You seem flushed."

"Fine," she said, much too quickly.

"It's probably far too warm in here and you're overexcited," Emily said, worriedly. "Are you getting sick?"

"It would be terrible for you to be ill over this weekend," Richard said. "Perhaps you should go lie down for a while."

"Yes, we'll take you and find you some tea," Emily said, putting her arm around Rory. She nodded to Anakin. "Nice seeing you again, young man."

"I'm fine," Rory protested. "Mom isn't even here yet."

Anakin was smirking at all of them, clearly entertained by the proceedings.

Lorelai came skidding to a stop outside Anakin's office after getting Rory's SOS text of grandparental doom, composed herself, then walked into the office, "Hi. So, leaving a first time father with a baby who can wander? Takes longer than you'd think. The list of emergency phone numbers was as long as my arm, and Miss Patty and Babette are on watch. Anakin, hi, how are you? Mom. Dad."

Anakin smiled back, clearly relieved. "It's nice to see you again," he said.

"You're late, Lorelai," Emily said disapprovingly. "Your daughter told us she was valedictorian and you weren't even here to hear it."

Lorelai gritted her teeth and reminded herself that setting her mother on fire and ending up in the pokey for arson the weekend of her daughter's graduation weekend would be bad.

Then what Emily said sunk in. "Valedictorian???" She squealed and then bounced up and down, "You're a smarty every day, aren't you, Lorelai Leigh?"

"You're a poet and you don't know it!" Rory commented, bouncing as well. "And yeah, I just found out today. It's not a huge deal."

"It's totally a huge deal," Anakin insisted, beaming at her.

"It's a tremendous deal," Emily said, in complete agreement with Anakin for once. "Shows this school can get something right."

"This school can get lots of things right, Mom," Lorelai argued, "but recognizing that my daughter is a genius and obviously one of the school's top leaders is definitely one of their crowning accomplishments."

"Seriously, it's nothing big. No reason to make a fuss," Rory said shyly.

"It's huge, and I'll make all the fuss I want. It's my prerogative as your mother to brag to everyone I meet that Rory Gilmore is brilliant."

Rory bit her lip and hazarded a glance at Anakin. "I'm all excited about graduating. I hope I don't trip or anything."

"You'll be great," Anakin said firmly. "You won't be dressed as tree this time."

Rory snorted. "Cap and gown, though," she reminded him. "I will look silly like a silly thing."

"Silly like a silly thing?" Richard repeated incredulously. "This is what this school has taught you?"

"Daft as unto a buffoon," she corrected.

"Silly like a silly thing was completely understandable, and besides, I taught it to her," Lorelai hadn't, but was more than willing to say so to take the blame and heat off of Rory.
