Anakin's desk was covered in electronics as he spun a tiny screwdriver between his fingers and consulted his schematics again.

It was easier to keep his mind off of unpleasant thoughts when his hands were busy.

The door was open.

Anakin shrugged. "I might be spending too much time with Rory."

"How is that going?" she asks. "Better?"

"It's..." awkward, confusing, uncomfortable, maddening, wonderful... "complicated," Anakin replied. "It's like we're meeting each other all over again, but with twenty years of baggage I don't want to talk about."

"She's not still finding reasons to hit you, is she?" Though she doesn't doubt that if Rory was, it would probably be deserved.

Anakin cracked a smile. "Not for a while," he said, "but we're not like we used to be either. Not that I expected anything else," he said quickly. "Force knows I couldn't handle a tiny penguin at this point, let alone a relationship like what we used to have."

If it sounded a lot like Anakin trying to justify something to himself, it was.

"You should concentrate on yourself first, anyway," Aeryn says. "When I first got back I refused to get back together with John, because I wasn't the same person I'd been even two weeks prior." She pauses. "Granted, it didn't exactly stay that way for very long, but the sentiment was correct and I don't think we would have solved anything if it hadn't been for that break. Be patient and you'll get there."

Aeryn, the postergirl for patience, yes.

Anakin shrugged again. "I don't deserve to get there at all," he said. "I should give that Jedi celibacy thing another try."

"We've had this discussion. There are two of you involved in this, and if Rory's willing to work on any sort of relationship, that's for her to decide. Knock it off," she says.

"She won't," Anakin decided sadly.

"But you said you're spending too much time with her," she reminds him. "A relationship doesn't need to be a romantic one. Take what you can get and continue from there. Don't overreach."

Anakin's mouth twisted. "My one constant failing," he murmured.

"If it helps, now you have people to hit you for it," she says.

"There's a line growing, too," Anakin said. "I told Sam Carter."

She can see Sam going either way on that. "Was she all right with it?"

"She was surprisingly sympathetic," Anakin said.

"Good," she says. "And she can be trusted if that hitting thing is in fact needed."

"It won't be, but yeah, she mentioned that," Anakin replied.

"You might find more support than you were expecting," she says. "You have to love Fandom for that."

"I had certainly not been expecting it," Anakin said.

"That's why I don't want to hear words like 'I don't deserve' coming out of your mouth. You've got plenty of people who'd argue that."

Anakin's ears went red. "It's still hard to believe."

"Do it anyway. After all, you've already proven yourself deluded by thinking you can beat me," she says. "

Anakin grinned. "Hey."

"On that note, I think I'm going to head out," Aeryn smiles. "Before you can try to convince me of your fighting skills some more."

Anakin waved. "I'll see you later this weekend, then," he promised.
