Cartoon Cuts [Virginia Suburbia, early evening]

It was time for Juliet's first haircut--her blonde curls had stopped being adorable and had started getting knotted. And being sixteen months old meant that a patient and careful comb-through was not in the cards.

So there the three of them were in a brightly lit children's barber shop: Anakin, toting Juliet and Rory toting the camera.

Anakin was looking for the most competent person in the shop. Juliet was looking at the cartoons.

"Dora!"

Rory was getting sort of desperate here. "Juliet, who's the prettiest princess? It's you, right? And only the prettiest princesses get ice cream and cookies."

Anakin was busy holding down everything within tossing distance through the Force, just in case Juliet decided to throw a truly spectacular tantrum that would be hard to explain in Arlington, Virginia.

"Eye cream?" Juliet replied, brightening.

"Yes," Rory told her, nodding. "Ice cream. Maybe with sprinkles?"

"And more eye cream?" Juliet wheedled.

"How much ice cream can you eat?" Rory asked, puffing out her cheeks and widening her eyes.

Juliet burst out giggling. "Funny!"

"What, me?" Rory asked, now pulling on her ears.

Dear god, if Juliet would just giggle and not cry, she would count this as a win.

More giggling, with bonus Anakin looking bemused. "Mamamama!"

"Now, Juliet," Rory said, trying to make even more ridiculous faces. "Haircuts aren't so bad, huh? 'Cause look, you get to be silly!"

She let out a happy shriek as Juanita took the last snip from her hair. "All finished."

Juliet looked like a little girl again, instead of a blonde sheepdog.

Rory actually sagged a little in relief. "Can she look at herself?" she asked, smiling down at Juliet.

"Of course," Juanita said, putting a blonde curl into a little plastic baggie and handing it to Rory as she held out a hand mirror towards Juliet.

"Hair!" Juliet correctly identified.

"Sooo smart," Rory praised, clapping her hands. "That's right, Juliet. Aren't you a pretty girl?"

Juliet nodded, then smiled. "Eye cream?"

"One track mind," Rory replied, reaching to pick her up. "What kind of ice cream?"

"Boo," Juliet decided.

Because there were a ton of blue ice cream flavors.

"Not green?" Rory wondered, tickling her a little.

Juliet squealed. "Nonononono," she insisted between giggles. "Boo!"

"Not yelloooooow?" Rory drawled.

"Boo!" Juliet repeated.

"Orange? Purple?" she offered.

More giggles. "Boo!" She turned to appeal to Anakin. "Daddy, boo!"

Juliet looked intrigued. "Red?" she repeated.

Ah, baby attention spans.
