After checking his office to make sure Ferus wasn't hiding in a closet or under his desk or something equally inane, Anakin flopped into his chair, consulted his notes briefly so he could remember which students he'd taught when, and waited for the first person to walk through the open into his office.

They couldn't have the coffee in his hands, by the way. Anakin needed that so he didn't tell everyone what he really thought.

"That the Mord'Sith are trained to serve the Lord Rahl," My that was an odd inflection on the word trained, wasn't it. "No matter what he might order them to do."

Richard was well aware of the fact he'd more or less said the exact same thing Anakin had using different words.

He frowned. "Compulsion?" he finally asked.

Richard shook his head. "He doesn't need to by the time they're trained," Richard said, much more calmly and evenly than he might have.

"So it's less compulsion and more long-term brainwashing and programming?" Anakin guessed, looking a little repulsed.

Richard hadn't come across those terms before, but he could make a guess at their meaning. "Something like that."

"So her morals are not necessarily her own?" he asked.

"It's more complicated than that," Richard replied. "She's not a bad person." No matter what Cara herself believed.

"I believe you," Anakin said with a small smile. "How can I help her?"

Richard eyed Anakin thoughtfully. "Don't let on you know," he said finally. Contrary to certain people's expectations, Richard was not stupid enough to believe Cara would be grateful for him telling Anakin this much. "She won't take the idea of being pitied well." And would most likely interpret sympathy in much the same way.

"I can do that," Anakin agreed, nodding. "Why did you tell me?"

"If you decided to push her for the information, Cara would have gotten hurt, whether or not you learnt anything," Richard said, a hint of warning to his tone. "She doesn't deserve that."

As it was, hopefully the barest minimum he'd just told him would do to satisfy Anakin's curiosity.

"I excel at minding my own business," Anakin said, "especially when someone doesn't want to share. I'll try to avoid unintended mines during a class discussion as well. Thank you for the information."

"You're welcome." And like that, Richard was back to his normal, easygoing self.

"Is there anything else I can assist with?" Anakin asked.

"I think we're good," Richard said, smiling. "But if you don't mind me asking, what so you use on your hair?" It might not have been quite as impressive as Kahlan's but it looked so healthy and shiny.

Anakin's eyebrows rose. "Shampoo."

Richard had spent the majority of the last two years washing in streams, and there wasn't a lot of opportunity to purchase hair product in the middle of epic quests.

There wasn't a lot of hair product in the Midlands full stop.

"Shampoo, right." He was going to have to ask Cara what that was.

"You can get some in town," Anakin added helpfully.
