After lightsaber practice with Ben, where Anakin had thumped his grandson around the gym because the boy wouldn't stop smirking about the weekend's sparring session with Luke, Anakin hobbled stalked slowly (stupid knee injury) back to his office.

He'd listened to his messages, so he was a little anxious to see if Raven came in today.

The door was open. The Jedi was grumpy. Just an average Tuesday.

"Jedi are trained only to use our abilities for knowledge and defense," Anakin replied. "But it doesn't mean that we aren't a force to be reckoned with if you push us too far."

"I am hesitant to use my gifts to defend myself," Raven said. "I think it would be best to learn another way."

[sith_happened]

Anakin nodded. "Perhaps you could ask Professor Atreides for assistance." He thought that she might be more comfortable with a woman for hand-to-hand work.

"I have taken her classes," Raven said. "I did not know she also taught defense as well."

[sith_happened]

"She co-runs the Fight Club," Anakin said with a tiny smile. "She's not bad."

From Anakin, that was high praise.

[trigons_child]

"Perhaps I will speak to her during our next class," Raven said. "I am tired of finding myself defenseless. I think it is time to change that."

[sith_happened]

Anakin nodded. "Shall we work on mental shielding today?"

[trigons_child]

"Yes," Raven agreed. "But I have a question I wished to ask first, if you do not mind. I did not have a chance to ask you in class because I was too busy being dropped into pits. That place you showed us to demonstrate gluttony, what did really happen there? Was the man who was trapped in silver freed?"

[sith_happened]

"It's called carbonite, and yes," Anakin replied. Let's not discuss how the man had ended up in the carbonite, thanks. "He's my son-in-law in a few realities." And this was Anakin holding out hope that there was a Leia who wouldn't go there. "My son and daughter rescued him before taking out Jabba and most of his minions."

"That is good to know," Raven said. "I know it was a simulation but I was concerned about his fate."

[sith_happened]

"It's a not-uncommon way to transport criminals back home," Anakin admitted. "Assuming the freezing procedure doesn't kill them, the person is kept in stasis almost indefinitely."

[trigons_child]

"And they would feel nothing?" Raven asked. "I suppose it would be a kinder fate in a way than to be imprisoned and fully aware of the passage of time and the emotions what would come with it, but it would also mean little chance of escape."

[sith_happened]

"Which is part of the appeal," Anakin said. "We prefer our criminals stay where we put them."

[trigons_child]

"You do not execute criminals in your world then?" Raven asked.

Little did she know.

[sith_happened]

"It depends on what part of history you are speaking of," Anakin hedged.

[trigons_child]

Raven nodded, understanding. "It changes depending on who is in power," she said.

[sith_happened]

"And what sort of values they have, absolutely," Anakin said. "The difference between how the Republic dealt with criminals and how the Empire did was stark."

And that certainly had nothing to do with who was the chief enforcer, right, Anakin?
