Skywalker Apartment [Tuesday evening]

Anakin was seated barefoot on the floor wearing only his undertunic and pants, his attention focused on the tiny baby on an equally tiny pink blanket laying between him and Rory.

"I know the pediatrician said that tummy time is important," he finally ventured, "but when Juliet can't lift her head yet, it just seems a little...mean."

"Oooh, nice one," Anakin replied. "Portabella."

"Effervescent," Rory replied.

"I think that one took me years to master," Anakin admitted with a laugh. "But our daughter is brilliant."

He peered down at the little girl. "Can you say 'brilliant,' Juliet?"

Juliet peered at him, then made a wee burbly sort of noise.

"She can," Rory said, beaming.

Anakin laughed. "She certainly can!"

It was far too close to cooing than he would ever admit to doing.

"Well, she takes after her daddy in her brilliance, then," Rory decided.

Anakin slanted a look at her. "Her father never got accepted to Yale and Georgetown. Her mother's clearly the brains in this operation."

"Eh, you're smart in a different way," Rory said, tickling the baby's back.

Anakin stopped talking for a minute as he listened to the baby's coos. "I'd certainly hope you wouldn't stick around with someone who had nothing intellectual to offer," he said, leaning in to kiss her. "My beautiful, brilliant wife."

Rory kissed him, keeping her hand on wee little Juliet.

It felt right.

"I love you," Anakin murmured, finally pulling back a bit. "I don't suppose it's time for Juliet to go to bed, is it?"

"I love you too. And she's an infant. She is always ready to go to bed. Think she's good on tummy time?" Rory wondered.

"Face plant time?" Anakin asked, chuckling and checking the clock. "It's been long enough."

He reached out to trail his finger down Rory's cheek. "I love her, but I miss just you, too."

"I miss sleeping," Rory sighed. "And you, too."

"Let me put her to bed, and you can go start a bath," Anakin suggested with a small smile. "And I can join you there."

Subtle as a Skywalker.

Rory raised an eyebrow. "You don't want me to help get her to bed?"

"Are you going to sing?" he teased.

"No need to give the child nightmares," she replied.

"It's not that bad," he said. "I can get her changed and you can come in to read 'Goodnight Moon.'"

"It's her favorite," Rory declared, despite the fact that Juliet was a month old and thus probably didn't have a favorite book just yet.

"It's about space, of course it's her favorite," Anakin declared.

Anakin had not, perhaps, been paying the strictest amount of attention to the plot of the story.

"...have you actually read it?" Rory asked, peering at him.

"...no?" Anakin replied.

"It shows," she said mildly.

He smiled ruefully. "So I'll get her dressed for bed, listen while you read the book and then we can take a bath?"
