Office hours [all day]

Anakin was back in his office (the holiday decorations were gone, thank you very much), tinkering with an overly complicated baby monitor.

For a baby who wouldn't be born for months. Anakin was getting neurotic early.

The door was open.

At some point, John trudged up to the open door, cloak in hand. "I was told I owed you a thank you."

Anakin's eyes locked onto the cloak. "You washed it?"

"There's even hope it didn't shrink," John replied, only half joking.

"You didn't put one of those smelly dryer sheets with it, did you?" he asked, holding his hand out. "I don't want to smell like flowers."

"Hey, I buy the detergent with the fabric softener built in," John informed him, reaching to pass the garment. "Dryer sheets are for the weak."

"Very well," Anakin said, checking the cloak over before floating it onto its normal hook. "See that you don't have to borrow it again, please."

A nice, realistic request.

"Hey, that wasn't my fault! The bunny thing just happens and I got lost!"

He should be glad John wasn't a cookie.

Anakin rubbed his hand over his face.

He wasn't hiding a smile. Really. Shh.

"Perhaps you should get some bunny-sized attire."

"Oh ha ha," John said, not amused at all. "And don't even give Jaina that idea! This is the first time I got away without any bows or hair clips!."

Anakin couldn't hold in his chuckle. "How fortunate for you."

"I guess I should know better than to expect any sympathy from a member of the amazing Skywalker singers," John smirked.

"I could throw things at you," Anakin informed him, "but I'm working on being a better person."

Also, there wasn't anything nearby to throw.

"I'm sure my body appreciates the lack of injury," John said. "As would the clinic staff."

Ben had been dreading this meeting all week, but he'd promised his father.

So there he was, knocking on the door jamb.

"Granddad?"

Anakin glanced up and froze. "Who did that to you?!"

Ben took a step back. Wow. He thought his dad could look scary.

Now he know where it came from.

"No one here," he said quickly. "Don't bring the building down on top of us or anything."

Anakin took a deep breath and counted to ten.

Then again.

And he was still gripping his desk hard enough to make the wood creak.

"Who was it, and how many pieces are they in now?"

Ben blew out a breath and stepped into the office. "It's a long story," he said softly, "and you're not going to like most of it."

NFB tiem!

"Not if it made you look like you got rancor-stomped, no," Anakin agreed, waving the door closed and pointing towards the chair in front of his desk. "Sit down before you fall down."

"I'm not that bad," Ben grumbled as he sat. "I don't know where to start," he admitted.

"Start with why you were going around talking with all of the teachers before the end of term," Anakin replied.

"I looking for ideas on how to fake someone's death," Ben said. There was no point in lying about it.

Anakin's eyebrows shot up. "Why?"

"I wanted to get near Jacen again," Ben said, eyes going flat. "He told me that Cal Omas was responsible for my mom's death. Figured if it looked like I'd killed him, Jacen'd think I bought it."
