33 Apocalypse Avenue, living room [early evening]

It had taken a couple of towels and a half-hour in a healing trance, but the back of Anakin's hand was scar-free. If their little arrangement stopped That Woman from touching another student, it was a deal at twice the price.

He flipped his comlink on and tried to reach Luke again.

As it had for the last dozen tries, the call remained unanswered, and Luke's sense in the Force was still absolutely furious at him.

Not that he could blame the boy.

Anakin reached for the remote and settled in for a long night at home.

After pummelling his punching bag into submission (he was going to need a new one, actually), Steve emerged from his basement to find Anakin on the sofa. "Oh," he said. "Hello. Do you...live here?" He totally failed at being social.

Anakin gave him a small smile. "For a while now. Hi. I'm Anakin."

"Nice to meet you. I'm Steve. I live in the basement. I left a cake in the kitchen on Independence Day," he offered as proof.

"I was a cat that week," Anakin said, blushing. "Looooong story. You teach up at the school, right?"

Steve couldn't remember anyone getting turned into an animal in his experience, but it certainly wasn't the strangest thing he'd heard of. "These things happen. And yes, I teach art. Or, well, I teach patriotism right now."

Anakin arched up an eyebrow. "Patriotism? I'm teaching the flight workshop during the summer, ethics in the fall."

"It's important," Steve said defensively, remembering his first meeting with That Umbridge Woman.

Anakin held up his hands. "I'm not saying it's not, given the right instructor. Instilling pride in where you come from is important. But patriotism tends to go with 'and that's why you're wrong and I'm not so let me oppress you' a lot of the time."

Steve considered how to answer that for a long moment. "I certainly hope that's not what I'm teaching my students. Although, I consider myself a patriot, and just before I came here I was arrested for treason and assassinated on my way to trial, so my stance is kind of unusual to start with."

Anakin blinked. "You were...assassinated," he said slowly. "You got better?"

"Apparently I was only dead for a few minutes," Steve said with a shrug. "These things happen." If it hadn't been that, he was sure he would have come back some other way.

Anakin nodded because yeah, they did. "Back home, it's more a cloning thing."

Steve nodded. "I had one of those. It had an evil Nazi in it. But now he's in a Russian instead."

"Ours fought a war for us, at least until they got so inbred they couldn't hit the broadside of a Star Destroyer."

Steve shook his head. "This is why you should fight your own wars."

[sith_happened]

"Or, ideally, don't start them to begin with," Anakin replied. "Clones against droids. We were like a science fiction holodrama."

"Ideally, yes, but I find I'm getting too old for idealism," Steve said wistfully.

Anakin's eyes were sympathetic. "War will do that."
