Office hours [all day]

Anakin opened his office door.

And stared.

Someone had redecorated.

Anakin stomped around the office examining streamers on the ceiling and paint on the wall, then the glitter-bestrewned Farrah Fawcett poster, and finally flounced over to sit in his chair.

With its pink boa.

He waved a hand and started up his little galaxy of stars, then picked up a pen that had been decorated with feathers--all of his pens had been decorated with feathers, what the hell?--and hoped no one visited today.

Though that didn't seem very likely.

Anakin ran his hands though his hair. "I don't know," he said. "One minute I'm telling her how much the idea of Xander possibly dating a high school student makes me uncomfortable, the next she's all Glitter McDrunkdial."

Anakin paused. "Did I really just say that out loud?"

Anakin hid his head in his hands. "I'm going out of my mind."

"Are you going to do anything about it?" She won't push, or not push, as it's not her place, but she's curious.

"I suppose I could take the posters down," Anakin said. "Get a vacuum in here."

"Yes, of course, that's exactly what I was talking about," she says wryly. "Aren't you a mind-reader?"

Anakin shook his head. "It's rude to poke around like that," Anakin said.

"Then I'd hope you'd be paying attention to the fact that this is me. Go ahead, tell me about your office cleaning." If he does it, she's hitting him.

Anakin sighed. "Okay. I have no idea where I screwed up with her," he said, "and no idea how to fix it. Or even if I want to."

"You told her that Xander dating a high schooler made you uncomfortable," she repeats. "That might be where the screwing up part comes in. The rest... I don't know what to tell you."

Anakin shrugged. "It's true," he said. "I don't think it's appropriate." He chewed on his lip. "The last time I broke the rules, I pretty much destroyed life as we knew it on a galactic scale. I won't do it again."

"You don't have to explain your reasoning to me. I think you've earned your right to caution," Aeryn says. "But even with a reason, she'll be upset. That's just normal."

Anakin turned to meet Aeryn's eyes. "But why would she be upset?" he asked plaintively. "I'm 42. My son is older than she is now."

"She seems to think you're calling her a child, for one," she tells him. "And it does sound like that, honestly."

Anakin was quiet for a long, long time.

"It's easier if she finds someone else," he said finally.

"Don't make her decisions for her," she says, a little more gently. "If that's what you want, there's nothing wrong with that. But let it be your own choices or you're going to lose your mind more thinking about what makes it easier for anyone but you." Not that she knows from experience.

Anakin stared at his hands. "I haven't made a right decision in twenty years," he said. "Maybe longer. I don't think I remember how it feels to be sure of myself."

"I know about that," Aeryn says, and she doesn't miss those days. "Start with the little things. You're not dressed ridiculously, so you did something right. Then you can move on to the bigger things."

Anakin took another deep breath. "Okay," he said. "I can do that." He let out a shaky laugh. "And in another fifteen years I'll be prepared to deal with Rory."

"A lot can happen in fifteen years. Maybe even good things," she assures him.

"Yeah." Anakin didn't sound convinced.

"Thank you for letting me whine about all of this."

"You've heard me do it enough," she says, though she'd never use the word 'whine' about herself.
