Office hours [all day]

Anakin opened his office door.

And stared.

Someone had redecorated.

Anakin stomped around the office examining streamers on the ceiling and paint on the wall, then the glitter-bestrewned Farrah Fawcett poster, and finally flounced over to sit in his chair.

With its pink boa.

He waved a hand and started up his little galaxy of stars, then picked up a pen that had been decorated with feathers--all of his pens had been decorated with feathers, what the hell?--and hoped no one visited today.

Though that didn't seem very likely.

"I know about that," Aeryn says, and she doesn't miss those days. "Start with the little things. You're not dressed ridiculously, so you did something right. Then you can move on to the bigger things."

Anakin took another deep breath. "Okay," he said. "I can do that." He let out a shaky laugh. "And in another fifteen years I'll be prepared to deal with Rory."

"A lot can happen in fifteen years. Maybe even good things," she assures him.

"Yeah." Anakin didn't sound convinced.

"Thank you for letting me whine about all of this."

"You've heard me do it enough," she says, though she'd never use the word 'whine' about herself.

"But I care about your life," Anakin said. "Mine's not nearly as interesting."

"Being full of drama and things that are bad doesn't make it interesting," Anakin muttered.

"Well, it's not like I've ever been bored talking with you," Aeryn points out.

Anakin gave her a grateful smile. "Thanks," he said softly. "It's been a strange few weeks. The Crazy Hermit in the Woods option was beginning to look appealing."

"Next time that thought occurs to you, just remember that there are several Stickbugs that I can imagine invading," she warns. "Things will change."

He waved his hand around the office. "Not to mention the interior designing that would no doubt occur," he said wryly.

He smiled. "I should let you go, though. Let you talk with less depressing people."
