33 Apocalypse Avenue [mid-morning]

A very small boy with a bucket over his head--thanks for that, Friday's toy chest--toddled down the hallway and made his way down the stairs.

Bounce-bounce-bounce.

Rear ends are great for that.

He made his way into the kitchen and leaned up onto his tiptoes to reach the cereal--something bright with incomprehensible writing on the side--and tipped about half of it onto the floor.

Exasperated, he lifted the bucket off of his eyes to see. Bright blue eyes gazed around the room and settled on the telephone.

Ooooh. He could call all of his friends!

Or punch random numbers and leave messages...which is what a four-year-old is much more inclined to do...

Anakin smiled and then plopped down in Rory's lap and leaned his head against her shoulder. "I like stories."

"What kind of story would you like to hear?" she asked, cuddling him.

He closed his eyes. "A happy one. With pirates. And Jedi."

"Once upon a time," Rory started, "there was a pirate princess named...um, Leigh. Now, Leigh was a very naughty girl, because as a pirate, she would take things that didn't belong to her and just generally was a bad girl. Also, she was really good with a blaster. Just saying. So anyway, Leigh the pirate was happily swashbuckling her place all over the galaxy when she met a Jedi Knight. The Jedi was very brave and very heroic, and his name was...." Rory searched her mind for a name that Vader would recognize but Annie might not, "his name was Merlin."

Anakin giggled and snuggled closer. "Merlin's a silly name."

"It is," Rory agreed. "Anyway, Merlin told her to stop her pirating, and she listened, because he was the best Jedi ever, and they fell in love. But then Merlin was looking at Leigh's stolen treasure one night, and he became a pirate in secret, and didn't tell her. She had to find out from his friend, and she was very, very upset."

"Because lying is bad," Anakin said solemnly.

"Yes sir, it is," Rory agreed with a little smile. "So this Jedi, who had been the bestest Jedi ever and was a big hero - he became a villain."

Anakin's eyes went very, very wide. "He didn't."

"He did," Rory said, nodding. "He became the worst, most evil pirate in the galaxy, and it was up to Leigh and her friend...um, Notvala...to bring him back. But he wouldn't listen. He cut off one of their best friend's hands and robbed the Jedi Temple."

"Nuh-uh," Anakin said, shaking his head. "Jedi live forever and wouldn't let him."

"He was bigger and a pirate," Rory told him seriously. "He beat them all up. But it's okay! Because his friends told him to stop it and he listened to them. And then he and Leigh had little Jedi pirate babies and they lived happily ever after. And Jedi pirates became the most famous beings in the galaxy."

"Good story, Rory-Ror," Anakin said, snuggling closer and closing his eyes.

Rory smiled, and cuddled him close and running her hand over his hair. "Rory-Ror? Is that my new name?"

"Uh-huh," he declared sleepily.

"Okay," she agreed amicably, smiling softly. "Do you want a blankie?"

He nodded and curled closer. "It's cold."

Rory carefully scooped him up, leaning him against her shoulder as she headed back downstairs to the couch, where she found a blanket. "Here we go," she said, settling down with him still in her arms, and pulling the blanket over them.

Anakin left his arms curled around her neck and closed his eyes again. "Better," he pronounced just before dropping off to sleep.

Rory sighed and resigned herself to not being able to get up for the next little while, and just watched him sleep.

She might not mind having kids, if they were like this. Maybe she could keep him this way.
