The playground corner of the park [Saturday afternoon]

Anakin was on a bench by the playground equipment watching his two children as they played.

Christopher ate sand. Anakin smiled.

Juliet jumped off the step side of the slide--Anakin caught her with the Force and smiled. Juliet blinked: that was not the expression she'd expected from her daddy when she did something that reckless. Being half Skywalker, she immediately beelined for a tree twice as tall as the slide to climb up and jump from.

...and Anakin smiled.

Mellow Anakin might be creepier than scary Anakin.

Rory was carrying a cupholder with two coffees, as well as a couple little cups of milk, when she wandered back from her Perk run. Anakin's coffee was a little bigger than hers -- loath as she was to admit it, he seemed like he needed it more than she did, today. He just seemed...more laid-back than usual, and that worried her.

Which was probably weird in and of itself.

"Juliet! Be careful up there!" she called, catching sight of what her daughter was doing. Christopher's chosen snack would get some attention in a moment.

"That is a blatant lie," Rory said, still looking concerned. "You guys fall all the time, you're just good at catching."

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2014-05-24 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Semantics. What's Chris eating?"

Sand, Rory. You've heard about sand before, right? It's coarse and gets everywhere, et cetera.

"Anakin!" Rory was now going to go actually sit with their son to make sure he didn't eat anything like broken glass or something. "Honey, there could be anything in this sand. Teenagers hang out in this park."

Seriously, Rory had gone to school here. She had a pretty good idea of what kind of grossness could be in that sand.

"Christopher, look, Mommy brought you crackers. Much better than sand, right?" Rory was already fishing animal crackers out of the diaper bag and carefully taking away Chris' sand with the other.

And, naturally, Chris began to wail. Because sand was his favorite, okay?

"You're not helping," Rory told him. "Are you, like, high?"

She really doubted it but this was weird. Usually it was a competition to see who was the more highly-strung of the two of them on any given day.

"I know, but, honey, you're acting kinda weird," Rory said, pulling Christopher into her lap to stop the shrieking.

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2014-05-24 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Right, like I said," Rory said, smiling. "Seriously, you're a little more...edgy than this."

And wouldn't be letting either of the kids do what they were attempting.

"Tea?" Rory stared at him. "Did you seriously just say 'tea'?"

To Rory, this was nigh-criminal.

"We are coffee people, Anakin."

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2014-05-24 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"What."

Rory was staring at him, almost in horror.

"Chai is a gateway drug and you know it," Rory accused, narrowing her eyes. "One day it's chai lattes, the next day you're joining Oprah's chai tea club."

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2014-05-24 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oprah has like fifteen different clubs," Rory said, still staring at him. "And no, you don't. You hate new people."

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2014-05-24 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Making new friends takes effort, too," Rory pointed out.

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2014-05-24 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, Juliet, that is too high, and if you don't climb down then you're spending the rest of the afternoon in your room."

Rory hated being the bad cop, ugh. Juliet, meanwhile, was looking between her parents and trying to decide who to listen to. Daddy seemed more fun, but Mom would actually stick to the whole 'grounded' thing, hmm.

"Or we don't send you anywhere, and you stop eating sand," Rory said, taking Chris' hand to shake out his sand. "Anakin, come on, you know he shouldn't eat sand. All the books say it's bad for them!"

And, you know, common sense.
