Anakin's office [early Monday morning, before classes]
Anakin, who had been running on the power of coffee for the last week, hadn't stopped watching the Games since the last shipment of bread had been delivered. There had been interviews with the survivors' families: Anakin was looking only to see Katniss's sister and to check that she still had all of her fingers attached.
He rubbed at his eyes blearily as the games began again, steeling himself for another day of devious, horrifying death. They were down to eight. Things were going to get even uglier.
[OOC: Up suuuuper early for the Hunger Games crew. NFB for character death.]

Katniss
Re: Katniss
And everything came crashing down.
Re: Katniss
Firekeeper, on the other hand, was silent, her fists clenched in Blind Seer's fur as she watched.
Re: Katniss
For a moment, there were no tears, just the dry burn in her eyes as she struggled to catch her breath.
An inhalation, like a drowning victim on land, loud and gasping.
And then an exhale. And with that, came tears.
Re: Katniss
He wasn't the type to pray anymore, but he did hope to himself that she found her way to Elysium safely and hoped to see her there at some point. Luke would focus his feelings towards Katniss and her situation to his own rebellion at home. He thought she would have appreciated that.
Re: Katniss
It'd been a while since she'd had that numb feeling that came with this sort of thing. Dimly she thought that her other standard reaction of trying to kill someone was easier to deal with.
Re: Katniss
But when the hovercraft came to take Katniss away like it had every time a tribute had fallen and the cannons had fired, she had to turn away and let her eyes fall closed.
Just for a moment -- just long enough to blink the tears away where they wouldn't fall on her parchment, her lips moving silently in a rare prayer that the gods would look kindly on her friend.
Just a moment, though. Her work wasn't close to done yet.
Re: Katniss
He couldn't look away. His hands were clenched into tight fists and his shoulders were shaking and he felt dizzy, and he couldn't look away.
He'd known this was coming.
Re: Katniss
It didn't. He rubbed his dry eyes and wondered if that would change. He focused on breathing and mentally said a few words to hopefully help a safe passing to the afterlife.
Re: Katniss
"Ima trava okolo! I korenja okolo..."
These are ashes, indeed.
Re: Katniss
There is no emotion; there is peace--let her have found some peace. Let me find the peace to shove aside my anger and frustration and the unmovable feeling of 'unfair' and help these students in my charge. There is no ignorance; there is knowledge--I still have the link to Haymitch and enough resources at our disposal to care for Prim and her mother now. We'll find out what else we can do to help, who else is left... Anakin took another deep breath, tuning into the room briefly to hear Ghanima's words and take some comfort in another, though unfamiliar, ceremony. There is no passion; there is serenity--I will be calm and useful and not upset the people in this room more than they already are. There is no death; there is the Force--and you're a part of it now, Katniss Everdeen. Watch over us, young one. Anakin took a deep breath, held it, and released his grief, fear and frustration as he blew the breath out.
Time to get back to work. He opened his eyes again and began appraising which students needed the most immediate attention.

Re: Katniss
Alex told herself sternly that she had seen dead children before, and allowed herself one full moment to close her eyes and will the tears in her eyes not to fall. She inhaled through her nose and exhaled through her mouth. She heard the soft murmurs of what sounded like rituals around her, and wished she still believed in God, that she might pray.
Maybe one didn't preclude the other.
Good-bye, Katniss. It was an honor.
And then, to dust herself off and take care of the others. She had made a promise.
