Anakin's office [early Monday morning, before classes]

Anakin, who had been running on the power of coffee for the last week, hadn't stopped watching the Games since the last shipment of bread had been delivered. There had been interviews with the survivors' families: Anakin was looking only to see Katniss's sister and to check that she still had all of her fingers attached.

He rubbed at his eyes blearily as the games began again, steeling himself for another day of devious, horrifying death. They were down to eight. Things were going to get even uglier.

Ghanima's smile was bright, and just slightly vicious the moment Katniss dropped her bow, understanding lighting up her face. "Oh you bright, wonderful, clever girl," she breathed quietly, watching the girl reach for the wire. "You can do it."

Karla didn't understand. "Do what?" she asked, knuckles white as she clenched her fists. "What's she doing? Lady Ghanima, I don't understand."

All Karla knew was that she was terrified, her nerves jangling like a fire alarm inside of her.

"Killing another of the Tributes means nothing, beyond playing the Capitol's game," Ghanima replied, leaning over to tap the screen. "There. The ripple of their personal shield."

"Beetee lied about the plan for the cameras; they aren't going to take out the beach. The shield, however, is defiance. She's going to bring the entire thing crashing down around them."

Karla tried to match up Ghanima's explanation with what she'd been able to follow of Beetee's plan. "The shield is like the lightning?" she hazarded. "And when the wire touches it, it'll explode?"

"When a power source - such as a laser - hits a Holtzman shield, it results in subatomic fusion and a nuclear explosion," she answered. "This not a Holtzman, not quite, but the principal is the same. The magnitude of this blast is unpredictable; sometimes it destroys only the shielded target and gunner, sometimes the explosion is more powerful than atomics."

"Which is to say that an explosion is not just likely, it's possible Katniss could take down their entire arena and all the technology behind it."

"She's ... she's going to bring it all down," Alex said, her mouth going dry.

There was a huge knot forming, in the pit of her stomach. And yet ...

And yet there was something else, larger, threatening to consume her. A wave of ... pride? Awe?

No matter what came next, Katniss was ending this on her own terms.

She was horrified that some part of her was congratulating a teenager on what could very easily be a suicide move. But this arena was a death trap, and this was an exit that no one could have anticipated. Maybe the blaze of defiance was worth it.

The screen was getting blurry, so she had to blink her eyes once or twice, very quickly.
