The Beach [late afternoon]

The sun was beginning to go down and Anakin was finished with his office hours. It was time for a friendly spar with his alternate-universe son.

You know, as so many families do.

Ben had found a rock to sit on and observe, looking faintly embarrassed by the entire proceeding.

The Second Annual Skywalker Family Lightsaber Duel and Sulking Contest was about to begin.

"I'm very good at compartmentalizing," Anakin replied quietly. "No one needs to know what I'm feeling but me."

They'd been rivals forced to work together multiple times as teenagers; Ferus knew how to recognize an Anakin Skywalker version of an apology when he saw one.

"I don't pretend to understand how this 'timeline weirdness' works," he said. "But if you are- were- him- then you ought to know better than anyone why I need to protect her."
