The Beach [late afternoon]

The sun was beginning to go down and Anakin was finished with his office hours. It was time for a friendly spar with his alternate-universe son.

You know, as so many families do.

Ben had found a rock to sit on and observe, looking faintly embarrassed by the entire proceeding.

The Second Annual Skywalker Family Lightsaber Duel and Sulking Contest was about to begin.

"I don't think I have time for it yet," Leia said, glancing up at the sky in the direction of her home galaxy. "I have to focus on being a senator." And leading the Rebellion. "I don't start training for years I think."

"From what Ben's told me about your galaxy, being skilled with weapons should be a mandatory part of your senatorial training," Karla said quietly. "I can understand if you don't have time to learn to be a full-on Jedi, but...weapons can be taken from you. The Force can't."

Unless is really was like Craft and then it was impossible to use three days out of every twenty-eight.

"It's part of how I'm preparing to be a Queen," she added.

"Oh, I can use a blaster," Leia said, nodding. "I know how to defend myself. But you're right. It would be handy to know how to use the Force as well. I wonder if I can convince" -- or nag -- "my father into teaching me."

Karla shared a smile. "I've been informed by a friend back home that I'm not going to be allowed to set up my Court until I can last at least five minutes in the ring with him," she said. "He takes being able to defend yourself very seriously."

Leia had to laugh. "I'm surprised my father doesn't have the same attitude about me leaving the dorms," she said. "He has no idea how many times I snuck out of the palace back home."

"Probably because he knows you can get up to just as much mischief inside the dorms as out," Karla said, dimpling. "Possibly more. The only thing worse than one teenager bent on causing trouble? A pack of us."

"I wish there'd been more girls like you in my last school," Leia said wistfully. "It would've been a lot more fun."

"This is the kind of fun that's measured by how loudly we get yelled at in the aftermath, right?" Karla just wanted to be sure they were both defining fun in the same way. "You should have been here last summer, when I organized the boxer raid on the males." She sighed happily. "Good times."

"Picture a school made up entirely of girls," Leia said with a little shudder. "And all they want to do is talk about fashion and hair and the latest gossip about their friends. And making fun of those who were not as wealthy or pretty as they were." She frowned at the memory. "And a lot of them abused drugs as well, just to feel good."

Karla shuddered along with Leia. "I wouldn't have survived," she declared. "I would have punched one of them the first month and been expelled." With gratitude. "You must be so glad to be here, even when your father and brother decide to act like they're twelve."

"They would have been hard pressed to expel the princess of Alderaan," Leia said impishly. "No matter how much trouble I caused. And I did cause quite a bit.... But Fandom is infinitely preferable to the Alderaan Select Academy for Young Ladies. Not just finding my family here -- I've learned useful things that don't involve finding a husband or which fork to use at the dinner table."

"Hey, that fork thing is important!" Karla protested, laughing. "You certainly wouldn't want to stab an offending diplomat with your fish fork during the salad course!"

"I was more concerned with what was the proper thing to throw in the face of an obnoxious son of a nobleman," Leia grinned. "The water or the wine?"

"How good is the wine?" Karla asked the practical questions. "You don't want to waste a good vintage on some aristo jackass. Not only won't you get to enjoy it, you know he's never going to appreciate the sacrifice."

Oh, if only Ben knew the real danger of the afternoon was Karla and Leia deciding to become friends.

Be afraid, Ben, be very afraid.

"It was terrible," Leia said with a wink. "The wine alone was reason enough to throw it in his face."

"In that case, aim for the most hideous part of his ensemble and hope it stains," Karla said, going to link arms with Leia. "I've found the groin a most useful target for when I'm throwing things."
