The Beach [late afternoon]

The sun was beginning to go down and Anakin was finished with his office hours. It was time for a friendly spar with his alternate-universe son.

You know, as so many families do.

Ben had found a rock to sit on and observe, looking faintly embarrassed by the entire proceeding.

The Second Annual Skywalker Family Lightsaber Duel and Sulking Contest was about to begin.

. . . Tahiri had brought ice cream, yet another point in favor of arguing she shouldn't be allowed to do diplomatic work.

"Another reason to be glad Lando's not here, or there'd be betting going on in the open," she announced.

"Is there going to be betting on the quiet instead?" he asked, grinning at her.

Tahiri smirked at him. "You mean there isn't already? I'm almost disappointed."

"I don't know which to put money on," Ben replied. "They'll both give me looks."

"So you keep the books, and the rest of us will bet," Tahiri suggested mischieviously. Because that was a brilliant idea. "Your grandfather's been spending every spare second of the last week getting ready for this, hasn't he?"

"Last two months," Ben said, shaking his head. "This became his hobby."

"He has hobbies?" Tahiri asked before she could stop herself. "Oh! I mean, um . . ."

Well, that was a conversational Sarlacc pit she just tumbled into headfirst.

Ben burst out laughing. "Haircare," he said in an undertone, "cloak billowing--"

"And five hundred billion situps, evidently," Tahiri added, ducking her head into his shoulder to hide the blush that . . . was probably broadcasting in the Force anyway.

"Are you checking my grandfather out?" Ben asked, scandalized.

"What? No!" And if Tahiri's embarrassment hadn't been radiating in the Force before, it definitely was now. "I just don't mean to make fun of him, that's all!"

Ben nudged his shoulder against hers. "Yeah, I think Granddad is taking this way more seriously than Dad is."

"I think your dad's more amused than anything," Tahiri replied, nudging him back. "Think of it this way: at least it's not an actual fight?"

"That's a big step forward for my family," Ben admitted. "That's kind of sad, huh."

"I suppose," Tahiri agreed. "It doesn't seem all that sad to me, but your family's the best point of reference I've got."

. . . yeah, that was sad.

Ben grinned. "And such a normal family we are."

"Does this mean I can't bet Ben's next trip to Chilly Boulder that Anakin is going to win?" Karla teased. "I'll just sit here and think it very loudly."

"Oh, go right on ahead," Tahiri told her, waving a hand. "I would have thought it was inevitable by now, really."

Karla offered her bowl of popcorn. "Would you care to make a wager?"

"You're on," Tahiri said, snagging a handful and offering the ice cream in return. "Although I'm putting my bet on Luke."

"Loser takes winner and Ben out for ice cream?" Karla said, laughing. She held out her hand to seal the deal--and to enjoy a bit of ice cream, too. "Or should we set different terms?"

"Oh, I don't know. I like those terms," Tahiri told her, throwing a firm handshake into the deal-sealing. "In a manner of speaking, we all win."

"I'm trying to convince Ben that this spar should be followed by a loving family dinner, but he's not buying it," Karla chuckled.

"Dinners with his family are awkward enough without a spar beforehand," Tahiri said wryly. "I can't exactly fault his reluctance there."
