The Beach [late afternoon]

The sun was beginning to go down and Anakin was finished with his office hours. It was time for a friendly spar with his alternate-universe son.

You know, as so many families do.

Ben had found a rock to sit on and observe, looking faintly embarrassed by the entire proceeding.

The Second Annual Skywalker Family Lightsaber Duel and Sulking Contest was about to begin.

Luke shrugged out of his outer cloak and smiled at Anakin. "This really isn't necessary, you know," he said for probably the fifth time.

"It will be fun," Anakin said with a slightly predatory gleam in his eyes, letting his cloak puddle to the ground ~~like Obi-Wan taught him~~ and igniting his lightsaber.

"I don't remember you having much fun last year," Luke said, eyes twinkling.

"That was because I was out of shape and overconfident," Anakin said, striking high. "This time I am neither."

The only thing that moved was Luke's lightsaber, blocking the blow. "But have you gotten better?" Luke asked, arching his eyebrows.

"Yes," Anakin said, striking again.

Luke smiled, recognizing the skill behind the movements, and then two men began a deadly, intricate dance.

Anakin was faster than Luke remembered, more precise, and more powerful, but Luke had more experience.

For the moment, at least, they were evenly matched.

Anakin was struck by sudden memories of the duel on the second Death Star, only they were reversed--his son was the one waiting for him to make the error.

Anakin was just not going to give him that opening. They began moving faster, executing moves even the sanest Jedi would steer clear of with precision that belied a trust in the other man's skill, even if they'd never say so aloud.

Besides, they had an audience. They needed to give them a show.

Luke was in no hurry: he'd learned his lessons about patience over the years and was betting on Anakin getting frustrated first.

That said, he was impressed by the man's flashier version of dueling (he was seeing some of the moves Ben had showed him in their more refined form).

Anakin smiled. "You've been working with a duel bladed technique, haven't you?" he said as he spun and parried. "You're keeping your left side more open."

Luke frowned. He had been working a bit with the shoto, but he didn't think it had been enough to shift his natural fighting rhythms.

Unless Anakin was trying to make him second-guess himself and overcompensate...

"Sneaky," he commented, smiling.

...and overcompensating slightly.

And that slight overcompensation was what Anakin had been looking for. He wasn't looking to kill or maim (though 'singe slightly' was tempting...), just to win.

A flurry of movement in an eyeblink and his lightsaber's blade was humming centimeters above Luke's right hand. "Yield?" Anakin asked.

A flash of irritation, quickly quashed, came into Luke's eyes before he smiled and stepped back. "Yield."

This seemed very important to Anakin for some reason, so Luke wasn't going to begrudge the loss.
