Skywalker Apartment [Tuesday evening]

Anakin, it should be noted, was not nervous about the potential disaster that might be walking to his door any minute now.

It was just a family dinner, all right? Leia, Jaina, and Ben.

And John and Tahiri.

And Rory and Juliet.

And five different galactic timelines to keep straight.

What's to worry about?

There was a ton of food and enough rum to blind a pirate drink. It would be a very pleasant evening.

And if he had to mindwhammy each and every one of them to have that happen, well, don't think it wasn't crossing his mind.

Rory snagged the other seat by Anakin, positioning Juliet's highchair between them. Equal-opportunity baby time, that way.

"Anyone need anything to drink?" she asked, not adding 'Don't worry, I'm not carding' but hoping the under-21 set got it anyway.

"I'll take whatever you've got," Jaina said, with a look of unspoken 'and spike it, please.' She was months over twenty-one, after all.

Rory almost immediately handed Jaina a totally innocent-looking drink that might smell a touch too much like vodka to be juice. "How's school going?" She cringed almost immediately, to her credit, and added, "I didn't mean to sound as step-grandmotherly as that did. I just really like school."

She almost replied 'almost over,' but knew the faces she'd get from people at the table for that. And she was too grateful for the drink for that. "Sure you didn't," she teased, and shrugged. "It's going. Two classes a week, I TA for one, just waiting for the chance to lead a revolution there. Are you still going?"

"Sure am," she said happily. "I graduate next year. And then I have to, like, find a big girl job. I don't suppose college is in the equation for you at all, is it?"

Jaina shook her head. "I'm already working. Have to go back later this week for it, even." Not that she was nervous about testifying or anything, seeing as how she'd never done it before. "I like that it saves me the trouble of filling out applications..."

"Ugh, and the letter anxiety," Rory sighed. "I got into all of my top schools except one, and one of my friends got in without even trying. So it's good you've got your spot figured out without all the worries."

"And I'm on leave from my other job." Overachiever much? "I'm kind of set, yeah."

"Well, if you ever want to take a year at Georgetown, I'll totally write an alumni letter of recommendation," Rory offered, only half-joking. She kind of didn't want to lose Jaina to that far, far away galaxy after this semester.

"I'll keep it in mind," Jaina said, though she knew school wasn't her thing. Seeing as how she was never even at the Academy when she went there. "What kind of big girl job are you looking for?"

"I'm going to be a reporter," Rory said with a touch of pride. "Hopefully for a big paper, but I'd like to work in politics, more than anything."

Well Rory just fit right in there. "Politics, really?" Of course Jaina was the one who yelled at politicians so she was a little biased against not liking it.

"Most people follow politics in some capacity, regardless of where they fit in the spectrum," Rory pointed out, shrugging. "Widest readership."

"That makes sense," Jaina conceded. "Though you'll probably end up wanting to hit things more than if you covered, say, sports. ...Unless you're really into a bad team."

[identity profile] auroryborealis.livejournal.com 2010-02-17 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Mmm, but I actually care about politics, and sports are more boring than watching paint dry, usually," she grinned.

"Then you're not watching for the right reasons." Oh, please, Jaina didn't scare about sports at all here save for the ones John played. Still, she thought that was a pretty good reason.

Rory got him a glass of ice water, only barely refraining from getting him a twirly straw. Just because she'd enjoy it didn't mean that a teenage boy would. "Nothing in the apartment's tried to bite you yet?" she teased lightly.

"No," Ben said, grinning back. "Should I be looking? Did Granddad put up traps?"

"No, but Juliet's kind of enjoying putting things in her mouth right now," Rory commented. "No teeth, but don't doubt her skill."

"Force powers yet?" Ben asked, giving his tiny aunt a worried look. If he got his butt kicked by a baby, he'd never hear the end of it.

Ben was sharply reminded of Uncle Han feeling left out when the rest of the family went into Jedi tangents.

He gave her a sympathetic smile. "You should talk to Uncle Han," he said, then paused. "One of them, anyway. I bet they'd have thoughts about raising Jedi kids."

"Definitely," Ben said. "He's the only non-Jedi in the whole family." He smiled. "Well, other than you."
