Skywalker Apartment [afternoon]

Anakin had been accounted as one of the finest mechanical engineers his galaxy had ever seen, which was why he was more than a little whiny pouty irritated that the crib he was putting together wasn't working like he'd envisioned.

And this was before he added the equipment to make sure the baby was still breathing. He put down his screwdriver (not throwing it through a wall like he really wanted) and called out to Rory, "How's the painting coming? Do you need a break?"

It had been nearly two minutes since the last time he'd checked.

"Anakin, I'm fine," she replied on a sigh, slowly rolling the paintbrush over the wall. "Do you need a break?"

"There are spaceships with fewer parts than this piece of furniture," he sulked.

Yes, yes he needed a break.

"Sweetie, you should put the screwdriver down and come paint," she decided.

He blew out a breath, shot the crib a look that would have killed an Imperial admiral and stood up. "I can get the taller parts," he decided, "so you're not getting on a stool."

And not at all because he was about to throw a tantrum. Really.

"And it's not like you're telekinetic or anything," Rory said solemnly.

"Won't that be a little too much like the mouse in that cartoon?" Anakin asked, smiling. "With the water buckets and then disaster?"

"Yeah, but easier," she commented, frowning lightly.

"Do I have to wear the hat?" Anakin asked, walking over to her.

"Anakin, you know the answer to that. You always have to wear the hat," she replied, tsking.

He laughed and leaned down to kiss her cheek. "Only the hat?" he teased. "Because I think I can pull that off."

Probably not, no.

"I'll get one, then," she said sunnily.

He grinned, deeply stupid unafraid. "Go ahead. I'm not afraid of you."

She grinned back. "Oh, sweetie. You've seen what Mom and I do with hats. You really should be."

Anakin reached out to swipe some paint down her nose. "I'm not."

Rory looked terribly outraged. "You painted me!"

"You look good yellow," he said with a grin.

"You look better," she said, trying to take a swipe at his face with her brush.

Anakin burst out laughing as paint covered his left cheek. "It's not exactly strawberry pie," he teased.

"Well, nothing ever is," she tsked, "but we'll have to make due."

"Or orange frosting," he said, reaching to swipe some more paint onto her.

She giggled. "Be nice to me, I'm pregnant."

Rory only had a few more weeks left with that excuse.

"I'm always nice to you," he murmured before trying to steal a kiss.

"Mmm. Or so you think," she replied, returning the kiss.

"Only with you, though," he replied, tilting his head to nip at her earlobe. "I have a reputation to maintain."

"Yeah, no one else knows that side," she sighed, trying to stay focused.
