Office hours [after the assembly]

Anakin was in his office wearing many, many, many layers. Every now and again he would glare in the general direction of an appliance, or the walls, or the ceiling.

He was very sure Peter would prefer his teachers fully clothed, especially after the demonstration at the assembly.

The door was open.

Peter came in once his mun was freed from the prison of work and looked for Anakin. "Hi! Uh, are you cold?"

Anakin shook his head. "I just prefer to stay completely clothed today, if I can manage it."

There. That's a nice, normal sentence. Perfectly explained.

"I'm content with the length of this session," Peter said, as long as they were offering opinions on the subject.

"I still need to commute home, and being unclothed could get awkward questions from the tourists in town," Anakin replied. "Have a seat."

"Depends on the town," Peter pointed out. He took a seat. "So what's first?"

"When I started, I found it helpful to clear my mind of extraneous thoughts," Anakin said. "Have you ever meditated?"

"I've concentrated," Peter said. He gestured towards his chest. "Like centering myself? It helps when I try to call up a power."

"Just like that," Anakin said, sounding approving. "Eventually I learned to do about eight things at once, but that's because I'm special." He was mostly teasing. "When you hear other people's thoughts, are you trying to do it? Do you have to call up a power to make it happen, or do you just kind of hear it all the time?"

"If I've got control of it I call it up," Peter said. "Like invisibility or the TK. But the ones I can't control just happen. But they're not on all the time. Just the power to pick up powers. That one is constant."

Anakin nodded, filing that away. "When you try to read me, what happens?" he asked. His mental blocks were instinctive at this point.

Peter concentrated and tried to read Anakin's mind. He strained, but didn't come up with anything. "Nothing. Not a peep."

"Good," Anakin said. "When we're done with your training, your brain'll be the same to anyone trying to peak inside."

"Sounds like a good start," Peter said.

"Okay," he said. "I need you to close your eyes and envision a mental wall. When you think it's strong enough, let me know, and I'll try to break through it."

"I'll do my best," Peter said. He closed his eyes and imagined himself surrounded by a sturdy wall. He pictured it keeping him safe and secure from attack.

As his belief in that wall grew stronger, he began to fade from view.

Anakin watched for a few minutes, fighting back a smile. "Peter?" he said. "You've gone invisible on me."

"Crap," Peter muttered, instantly reappearing. He gave Anakin a sheepish look. "Sorry. It's usually a goo ddefense, you know?"

Anakin grinned. "Usually. I can find you even then, though. You didn't disappear in the Force for me."

"Huh, really?" Peter asked. "What's it feel like? Or look like?"

"You just...fade," Anakin said. "What I do just tricks the mind into thinking I'm not there anymore when I actually am. You really go away, at least from what my eyes can see. My other senses aren't that easily fooled."

"I meant in the Force," Peter said. "You said you could still see me with that. What'd I look like?"

Because if Peter knew, he could try to be more invisible. He also wanted to know in case he ever bumped into Claude again. He figured it was the kind of thing Claude would appreciate a warning about.

Anakin looked a little embarrassed. "In the Force, everything kind of...glows. We're luminous beings. I see beyond the outside to what really makes you...you. It's why I don't get confused by the multiples running around. You're no more like Jess than you are like Dean, or like my son Luke."

Anakin wasn't terribly helpful, no.

"So the only way to turn that off would be to be dead?" Peter guessed.

"My grandson's figured out a way to flip it off, but, yes, it feels like he dies. I don't like when he does that."

Anakin was grossly understating how much he didn't like that.

"But it can be done," Peter said, ever one to ignore the implications of his actions.
