Anakin had kicked out all of the groomsmen and was now staring at his reflection in the mirror and fussing with his bow tie again.
He had a sudden compulsion to keep moving, and it was better than checking his chrono to watch the minutes tick by.
gilmorerents | Things with Rory were going...about how she'd expected them to. Still, her baby girl's extremely efficient and slightly terrifying bridesmaids seemed to have things well in hand, so it was time to do something she'd been putting off.
Taking a deep breath, Lorelai knocked on the door, then called out, "You decent? Because I'm coming in and I have no desire to end up in either a Lifetime special or a country and western song."
sith_happened | Anakin laughed, sounding a little nervous to his own ears. "Come in, Lorelai."
gilmorerents | "That's still a little disconcerting, gotta say." She grinned as she entered the room, but closed the door firmly behind her. "So. You almost ready?"
sith_happened | Anakin nodded. "I'm not nervous," he said. "I'm excited."
gilmorerents | "As you should be," she said, walking over to straighten his tie, "Since you're getting the most perfect girl in all the world, even when she's not."
sith_happened | Anakin beamed. "She's always perfect."
And he really, really believed that.
gilmorerents | Lorelai resisted the urge to roll her eyes at her future son-in-law on his wedding day.
Okay, stop and process the weird for a second. Better.
"Rory made me." She folded her arms across her chest in lieu of pockets. "So you'll understand that I wouldn't let her get married at nineteen to just anybody."
sith_happened | Anakin nodded, suddenly serious. "I'd do just about anything for her," he said quietly, "but I think you know that."
gilmorerents | Lorelai nodded back, pleased they were speaking the same language. "Here's the thing, though, and please take this in the loving mother and possibly-true-but-you-better-never-call-me-your-mother-in-law way."
She leveled a look at him. This had been a hard lesson for her to learn as a mom, even back to when Rory was learning to walk. "She has to make mistakes sometimes. The harder part is that we have to let her, or she won't learn and grow."
sith_happened | Anakin nodded again, swallowing hard. "Not an easy lesson to remember," he replied.
gilmorerents | "No. Especially if she gets hurt."
sith_happened | Anakin bit down hard on his lower lip. "How hurt?"
gilmorerents | "You have my permission to keep her from doing almost anything that will directly cause her to end up dead, in the hospital with an injury, or in prison." Then she considered Rory, who would kill her dead if she lost her freedom because of this conversation. "Not because you think she could, but because you know she will. Definite."
sith_happened | "I can live with that," Anakin said finally, nodding. "I'm not going to wrap her in a bubble, much as I might want to. I've let Luke make his own mistakes, as hard as it is to watch him do it."
gilmorerents | "There's something else, too," she leaned over to brush some hair out of Anakin's face, "and I hope you won't be offended."
sith_happened | Anakin gave her a small smile. "What is it?"
gilmorerents | "First, no calling me Mom. You had one of those already and Lorelai's good enough for me anyway." She smiled back. "Second, I want you to feel like you can come to me if you need to, because you're becoming part of our family. Weird, warped, and caffeinated as it is."
sith_happened | "I love your weird, warped, caffeinated family," Anakin said before he could stop himself. "I love that you have a son named for a coffee chain. I love that you and Rory are so close. And I love her more than I anything in this universe."
gilmorerents | Damn it. She was going to have to redo her eye makeup. "Then I guess I'm going to have to let you marry her."
sith_happened | "If you'd said no now, the groveling would have been beyond pathetic," Anakin said with a shy smile.
gilmorerents | "See, now I'm almost sorry I missed it." No, she wasn't.
sith_happened | "I'll save it for Christmas or a really special occasion," Anakin promised. "I know calling you Mom is out," not that it had ever really been something he'd thought about, "but what do you think of Jaina calling Emily Great-Great Grandma?"
gilmorerents | Oh, she knew she liked Anakin. "I think she should do it as often and loudly as possible. Oooh, what do you think of putting it in the paper?"
sith_happened | "In bold type?" Anakin asked.
Yes, he was still a little cranky at the elder Gilmores. He held grudges. It was his thing.
gilmorerents | "And italics! Ooooh. I bet we have a town crier, and if we don't, Kirk works cheap."
sith_happened | "I love how you think, provided I'm not the one who has to talk to Kirk." His eyes lit up. "Oooh. Groomsmen task?"
gilmorerents | Lorelai considered the groomsmen, then burst out laughing. "I think Angel would be perfect for that, yeah."
sith_happened | "Make sure someone gets pictures," Anakin said, glancing at his chrono, then into the mirror again. "Do I look like a complete idiot?"
Six feet plus of tuxedo-wearing Jedi looked down at her a little anxiously.
gilmorerents | "Can do. And no, you look perfect," Lorelai said, deciding to hell with it and straightening his tie. "You ready?"
sith_happened |
He nodded. " As I'm ever going to be." He took a deep breath. "Okay. Let's go." He leaned down and gave Lorelai a swift, shy, kiss on the cheek. "See you at the ceremony."
