Anakin wasn't staring into space in a vaguely Connecticut-like direction.

Because that was just entirely too ridiculous. He was an adult and was perfectly capable of going for a week without seeing his fiancée.

He just didn't like it.

He stared at his phone and pondered calling members of the wedding party. Rory would be very proud of him for getting to check something off of her many, many lists.

He just didn't really want to talk on the phone.

The door was open and he'd welcome any distraction.

River stopped in the doorway, smiling at Anakin. She made no attempt to hide from him that there was something on her mind that worried her though, and while that wasn't the only reason for her visit, she did want to mention it to Anakin.

Anakin's eyes locked on hers. "What's wrong?"

"The new librarian has tried to kill me." Not this version of herself though. Not in Fandom.

Anakin bolted up, hand going for the lightsaber that was locked safely away in the weapons closet.

"He is trying to change," she said. "Still don't trust him."

"Want him to go away?" Anakin asked, scanning her face. The tone in his voice suggested a permanent solution.

"Will you keep an eye on him?" River didn't feel like a permanent solution was necessary just yet, but she did think in was important that Anakin knew about this. "Trained by the same people," she added.

"Will the same safe word deactivate him?" Anakin asked softly.

She shook her head. "I don't know. Am unsure how to act. I named him Bob."

"Be careful," Anakin advised. "Zoe knows?"

She nodded. "Will you speak to him?"

"Would you like me to?" Anakin asked. "Let him know there are a couple of sets of eyes on him?"

Another nod. That had been her purpose of telling Anakin, after all.

Anakin reached out to touch her cheek. Then I've got it handled. He won't come near you.

She smiled a little. Thank you. "Remember to call him Bob."

Anakin nodded. "Excellent choice in names, by the way."

She chuckled, then turned serious. Orders. Trying to protect what he believed in.

River nodded. She certainly agreed with that.

You're all right? Anakin checked.

Just uncertain. On my guard. She shot Anakin a worried look. If he wanted to get to me he could use Adah.

Does he know that? Anakin asked, going immediately on guard.

River averted her eyes. Gave it away. Met him in the library when I went to see Adah. He has eyes to see with. There was a pause. Said I would kill him if he hurt her. He didn't doubt me.

I'll be sure to mention it too, Anakin promised.

Thank you. She certainly trusted Anakin to keep his word, and it did make her feel better.

She smiled a little. "Just wanted you to know."

Anakin gave her a reassuring smile in return. "This is what I do," he replied.

Her smile widened. "And how have you been?"

There was no point in hiding his deep happiness, and he didn't try to. "I'm getting married."

"Good. When?" This was good news, and she enjoyed sharing his happiness.

"Not for a few years," Anakin said with another smile. "Rory wants to finish school first."

River nodded. "A long engagement then. Did she like the ring?" For some reason River saw no objection to being nosy.

He nodded. "I saw it in a window and bought it on a whim," he said. "It just felt right."

River grinned. "A wise way to choose." She tilted her head and let him feel clearly that she was happy for him, happy to see him happy.

"I keep waiting for the other boot to drop," he admitted. "Happy is a rare feeling for me."

"Makes it more precious," River noted.

[Bedtime!]

The smile was back. "That is it," he replied.

"Shouldn't keep you any longer," River said, rising from the chair. Am pleased that you had good news to counter my bad ones.

Anakin stood up too, and leaned over to kiss the top of her head. I'm glad you brought your bad news to me. We'll fix it.

There was a 'thank you' in her eyes, then River turned, and quickly slipped out of the door.

Sam finally remembered that she'd never congratulated the other half of the happy couple and dialed Anakin's number.

In her defense, it had only taken a week. That had to be some kind of progress.

Anakin picked up his comlink. "Skywalker."

"Congratulations," she said without preamble. "I spoke with Rory."

Anakin's smile was practically audible. "Yeah," he said. "It was kind of a spur-of-the-moment thing."

"Hmmm. Sounds to me like you took the girl you're crazy in love with to Paris and proposed," she teased. "I think you might flunk impulsive, Anakin."

Anakin chuckled. "Maybe, but I got the girl."
