After coming back from settling some details with Zoe about Hamlet, Anakin should have been preparing for his flight out with Rory.

Instead he was sitting on the shuttle ramp and staring off into nothingness, lost in his own thoughts.

Anakin stared back.

"...so before then," he said slowly.

"Baby. Steps. Are we even dating, really?"

She paused.

"...have we ever been on a date? Like, ever?"

Anakin thought about it. "Does bowling with John and Aeryn count? Or the movies with Marty and Angela even though we never left the room so I think I answered my own question?"

"None of the dances count because we were going ostensibly as friends," she said, thinking. "Any time we've been flying doesn't count, except possibly the first time you took me in the sim? But I didn't think that was a date or that it'd end that way."

"This is easily fixed," Anakin said with a smile. "Will you have dinner with me? Out in public? Where squirrels can see us?"

Rory grinned. "I'd like that. We'd be reported on the radio. People could know. How weird is that?"

"It'll break Qui-Gon's brain, but it'll be good for him," Anakin said. "So, Ching Tai? Saturday night? We can eat with sticks again..."

Rory leaned over to kiss him softly. "Sounds perfect."

"You're perfect," Anakin replied because he was Smooth Like That, then kissed back, nipping lightly at her lower lip.

"I have eighteen years of practice at it," she told him between kisses.

"Time well spent," Anakin murmured, deepening the kiss.

Not that he'd spent a lot of time thinking about how this sort of thing would play out at all.

"For a guy who hasn't seen any action for twenty years, you aren't bad at this," she murmured.

"I'm only at 'not bad?'" Anakin whispered, sucking gently on her earlobe before blowing a small breath of air against it. "That's disappointing."

"Your ego's bad enough as it is," she sighed, shivering.

Anakin looked ridiculously pleased to get a shiver out of her, then repeated the gesture on her other ear.

He didn't want any part to be feeling neglected.

"...we should stop," Rory said reluctantly, biting her lip.

Anakin rested his forehead against hers and stroked her cheek again. "Baby steps," he recited.

"And I am thinking some very definitely not baby-step-type thoughts right now," she said a bit huskily.

Anakin gave her a small smirk. "I know," he said, kissing her softly before pulling back. "But I'm in no hurry."

Anakin had the grace to look slightly abashed. "I never really saw the point in playing fair."
