Ye old shuttle parking [early afternoon]

Not that he thought Lucas might be right--at all--but it never hurt to give the shuttle a complete inspection every week.

And a new coat of wax.

Though the "crooning to it" part he was engaged in at the moment was strictly optional.

And frankly, pretty dorky.

Rory got there on time, but tried to be quiet.

Why?

Because the crooning was kind of ridiculously adorable. Not that she was going to say anything.

"Hi," she said after a moment.

Anakin grinned over at her, looking relaxed and happy for the first time in a while. "Hi!"

"You look...like you," she noted. "Having a good day?"

"It would be strange if I looked like someone else," he agreed with another smile. "And sure. The flight workshop's heading into space on Friday and one of the students is worried my ship's going to vent to the atmosphere."

He snorted. "My ship."

"Like real space? Where are you going?" she asked curiously.

"Probably just a loop around the system," Anakin said. "I don't want to get too far out and there's enough room around here that they won't plow directly into a planet if they're not paying attention."

"I haven't yet," she said cheerfully. "They won't."

Anakin smiled. "That's because you're good, not because I'm that great a teacher," he said, giving the shuttle an affectionate pat on the nameplate before walking up the ramp.

"No, I'm not and yes, you are," she argued, following him.

"I made a student cry two weeks ago," he said softly, sitting in the pilot's chair and frowning. "I'm not that good."

"I don't get to take off today?" Rory asked, sitting in the passenger seat. "Who cried?"

"Oh, sorry," Anakin said, blushing. "Go ahead. Old habit when I'm distracted."

Not answering that other question? Anakin? Of course he wasn't.

"Whoever cried is a giant baby," Rory said, starting the now-familiar sequence.

He shook his head. "It was Z."

"You made Z cry? What did you do?"

Wow, way to be sympathetic, Rory.

"She wasn't moving fast enough on the Naboo sequence and it was a bad week and I lost my temper and I suck," Anakin said sullenly.

"Is she okay now? Did you apologize?"

"I don't think I was supposed to know she cried," Anakin decided. "It's better not to say anything."

And it came with the added bonus of not having to admit he'd been wrong, which he was all over.

Rory waited until they broke atmosphere before fixing him with a look. "Are you being especially nice to her, then? Try to regain what you lost?"

Not particularly.

"I can do that next week?"

Rory rolled her eyes. "What if it'd been me?"

Rory would've gotten groveling for weeks. Hell, he was still groveling from being an idiot the last time.

And the time before that, too, yes. Shh.

"I don't understand the question."

"What if you had snapped at me and I had cried?" she clarified.

"You're different," he said quietly, looking embarrassed.
