Office hours

Anakin didn't make it a habit--especially since he'd move to the island--to sleep in his office, but his nightmare on Wednesday had been enough to wake up both Juliet and Christopher just from the residual distress he was feeling in the Force.

And that had been far from his worst memory, so here he was, camping out in his office and working on increasing his mental shielding.

As you do.

Rey didn't know what was going on, but she knew that something was. And given that she honestly didn't know how much of what was happening was her, or how much was stuff she was picking up from other people.

So, she was knocking.

"Come in, Rey," Anakin called, opening up his eyes but staying in his meditative position on the floor.

"Let me guess," she said as she came in, also taking a seat on the floor to mirror his position.

"Having some bad feelings about things, too?" Anakin asked wryly.

[thatwaslucky]

"I haven't really slept in two days and I'm starting to feel crazy," she nodded.

[sith_happened]

"You're absolutely not crazy," Anakin said, gesturing to the space next to him. "Want to meditate?"

In this nice, darkish room?

"It might help," she said. "My focus hasn't been great."

Weird, right?

"Hard to imagine why," Anakin said dryly.

[thatwaslucky]

"No sleep, bad dreams, paranoia, and picking that up from everyone else on the island? It's great."

It was not.

"It's really not," Anakin agreed.

[thatwaslucky]

"How are you doing?" Rey asked.

If she was having a hard time, she could only imagine...

"Well, it's been a while since we've had a week where it really screws with my head," Anakin said, "so I've moved into the office to spare the children whatever I'm feeling."

"Oh," she said, frowning. "That's... a horrifying thought."

Not just even about him specifically. She couldn't imagine kids having to pick up on all these things.

Anakin pressed his lips and nodded. "They've learned how to block from when they were very little, fortunately."

"That's a good skill to have." One she was a little jealous she hadn't grown up with.

Especially since she could feel that too-familiar creeping darkness again.

There was absolutely no reason for Aphra to be hanging around Anakin's office, or to be getting her day drinking on, certainly not a series of dark, disturbing dreams that had eventually morphed into one where Darth Vader had been having a tea party with her mom (Vader had been pouring on account of Mom only having one arm).

"Heeey, boss."

Anakin cracked his eyes open. "Come in," he said, gesturing.

With exceedingly careful movements, Aphra came in and sat down near Anakin. "Have I ever mentioned how good your hair looks, boss," she said, again exceedingly careful. "It's not ridiculous at all."

It should probably be mentioned that 'exceedingly careful' referred to her diction, not her word choices.

Anakin snorted. "I definitely believe you," he said dryly.

[jedigrammarians]

"You should. I'm a very good judge of these things."

Aphra, you weren't a good judge of anything. It was how you ended up here in the first place.

"I've heard that about you," Anakin said. "You're not here to drop off a bouncy castle, right?"

Lightness was good.

"Oh, that went back with the guy who set it up, wouldn't steal a one of those."

Let's be real, she probably would.

[sith_happened]

"That is terrible reassuring," Anakin said with a tiny smile. "It's nice to know you have some standards."

[jedigrammarians]

"I have standards, so many standards," Aphra protested. "Just not stupid enough to put them above surviving."

[sith_happened]

Anakin smiled. "That's very fair."
