Anakin was back in his office, looking practically like himself again.

Just don't ask him to fight off an invasion just yet.

But he was there, working on his ethics syllabus for the next year with the door open and soft music playing.

There were probably a few conversations Rey needed to have, but this was a big one. She also wasn't sure if this was a good time, but since when had that stopped her?

So she came to the office with her bag over her shoulder and knocked. "Professor Skywalker?"

Anakin looked up from his comm. "Yes? How can I help you?"

"I'm not sure if you remember me," she said, since she'd always faded into the background and their most notable interaction was him yelling at her for things in China. "I was hoping I could speak with you."

And she figured she should ask, "Are you feeling better?"

...The most hated man in the galaxy and she was asking him if he felt better. Her life had gotten weird.

"Much better," Anakin said, nodding, "and I remember you. You haven't climbed a different international monument, right?"

Rey had to think about it, because Ahch-To.

"No," she said, and closed the door before coming to sit down. Always a good sign! "At least not as far as I know."

Anakin smiled. "Well, that sounds like plausible deniability at least. How can I help you?"

Rey has practiced this in her head a hundred times, and now wasn't entirely sure how to start.

So she reached into her bag and pulled out the two pieces of what would be a very familiar lightsaber, and held them out. "Do you recognize this?"

Anakin's breath hitched immediately and he waved a quick hand at the window, telling Leroy that he definitely wanted to be somewhere else right now with a not-so-gentle Force shove.

"How do you have that?" he demanded.

"It was waiting in a castle on Takodana," Rey answered, and added, "It's mine now."

It was currently useless, but she'd fought for it, so it was hers now.

"How the frell did it end up on Takodana?" Anakin asked, reaching out a cautious hand toward the nearest piece.

"I don't know," she admitted, letting him see it if he wanted. "I was a little distracted at the time."

"Was it broken when you found it?" Anakin asked.

"No. It happened in a... in a fight, sort of." It would have been a fight, she was pretty sure, which is why she'd gone for it. "I'm going to fix it."

Nina poked her head around the doorframe, feeling that she'd sufficiently announced herself already, and beamed at him.

"I'm so happy you're okay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Anakin couldn't help by smile in the face of all that enthusiasm. "Thank you."

"It's only the truth," she said glibly, and honestly. "That's all, like, I really came to say??????????????? I wouldn't want to bother you, if you're busy?????????????"

Since he looked like he was working and all.

But since he was smiling back at her, Nina was pretty sure she wasn't interrupting him too badly...

"Nothing that pressing," Anakin said. "Come in."

Nina brightened even more.

She wouldn't have held it against him if he was too busy to chat with her, but it was nice that he had the time! Before he could change his mind, Nina slipped into the room and over to a chair, to sit in it primly.

"Anything exciting?????????????" she wondered. "Like the summer shenanigans??????????"

"No," Anakin said, smiling. "Coming up with new ethical scenarios. Very boring."

"Well, maybe a little boring," Nina conceded, a little doubtfully, since Nina didn't think that sort of thing was boring after all, "but, like, really important!!!!!!!!!"

She grinned at him.

"Does that mean you're teaching ethics this semester????????????"

"I am," Anakin said with a nod. "I try to do it once a year."

"You can't think it is too boring then, right?????????" she wondered.

"I think it's a very important thing to teach," Anakin said, "but I'm not sure the students are always thrilled to learn it."

Nina considered that.

"Well," she said slowly, "a lot of ethics is talking about how badly, like, things can go and that sort of thing is never comfortable, I guess????????? Especially not if the topic at hand isn't some vague abstract but, like, something they did, or could do, or might be faced with??????????????"

Anakin nodded. "I want them to be uncomfortable," he admitted. "I'd rather them be uncomfortable in the safety of a classroom as they think about what they'd do rather than be complacent, have things go wrong and them making a choice out of instinct and fear." He tapped his fingers on the desk. "Does that make sense?"
