In preparation for his class on meditation, Anakin was on the floor of his office with his eyes closed and his hands on his knees, seeking calm.

There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no tiny future Emperor's Hand there is...kriff.

Anakin blew out a frustrated breath. Trying again...

Yeah, you keep searching for that calm, Anakin. Because it sure as Hell wasn't going to be anywhere near your office once a very pissy Karla showed up. She had things to do back home that were being put on hold JUST so she could come back to the island and yell.

A lot.

With italics.

And she was gonna start their talk by pounding on the door with her fist. Repeatedly. Loudly.

Oh, and ringing an bantha bell.

While shouting, "LITTLE BUNNY FOO FOO, I KNOW YOU'RE IN THERE AND WE NEED TO TALK!"

"INSIDE VOICE," Anakin bellowed back (because that'll help), trying to yank the bantha bell away using the Force.

Kriffing Bel.

Hey now! Technically, this was back from Karla's own student days. So he meant kriffing Madrox.

Equally deserved.

"YOU'D BETTER LET ME IN BECAUSE YOU DO NOT WANT ME SHOUTING YOUR BUSINESS ALL UP AND DOWN THIS DARKNESS-BEDAMNED HALLWAY, ANAKIN!" Karla being Karla, there was no cessation to the shouting. It was, however, interspersed with some grunting as she struggled to hold on to her stupid bell.

"Get in here, then," Anakin hissed, yanking harder on the bell and dragging her inside by it.

Making sure the door closed behind her, Karls stood in front of the Dean, arms folded across her chest, bristling at him. "You owe me an apology," she told him. "And you know it. And you should probably make sure that all the squirrels are gone before you give it, unless you want personal, family business showing up on radio tomorrow."

Anakin shooed the squirrels away, then gazed back at her levelly. "Why should I apologize?"

"Because you didn't think you warn me, that day I caught you hiding behind a goddamned tree," Karla shrilled. "Did you maybe forget who one of my best friends was in high school? Or did you think I was so bloody stupid I wouldn't be able to figure out I was teaching a young version of Ben's dead mother!"

And then, just to really emphasize her point, Karla fired a few of the nastier Huttese curses at him that she'd picked up over the years. You know, what with being friends with various Jedi and taking trips back and forth to Naboo and all.

"I was recovering myself!" Anakin said. "She's not exactly my biggest fan ever."

Beat.

"And your pronunciation is off."

"E chu ta!" Karla flared. "How was my pronunciation there?!"

She really was looking for things to throw at his stupid head. "And you haven't called to warn your own grandson yet...why? Knowing that he comes back for things like Homecoming and even just the occasional visit? You think he'll be more grateful for the information the longer you wait? Or were you just gonna let it be a happy surprise for him? You know, I don't think he's been punched in the balls by family in a few months, so this'll be a nice reminder of why he moved to a different bloody galaxy!"

"I've HAD FOUR DAYS TO DEAL WITH THIS," Anakin exploded. "I would have called him before Homecoming."

"I had less than that--for which I thank you--and I still managed to put in a call to let him know!" Karla yelled right back. "A warning, Anakin! That's all I would have liked! But Mother Night--if you really thought I too stupid to put it together on my bloody own, did you not stop to think about me being too stupid to not realize there are some things I shouldn't talk about? Especially in a class about destiny?! Because boy howdy do I have a few stories about people I know and their bloody great destinies!"

Anakin ran both hands through his hair in frustration. "I forgot you and Ben were close enough that you'd recognize her. I barely recognized her and was worried that she'd notice me, since I'm supposed to be dead and she was not exactly my biggest fan."

"You...you forgot?!"

That was roughly a million times worse than thinking she was too stupid to figure it out.

Which was why she was whipping that damn bell at his head for it. Fortunately for him there was no Craft fueling the trajectory, but there was plenty of anger and hurt to make up for it.

"You forgot--the number of times I Healed--he's saved my kriffing life--YOU ARE SO BLOODY DENSE I HAVE NO IDEA HOW YOU HAVEN'T STARTED BENDING THE BLOODY LIGHT!"

She wasn't teary-eyed, you shut up.

Anakin snagged the bell from the air and slammed it onto his desk. "His mother died very early on and he--"

They were stupid excuses and he knew it even as his mouth was trying to excuse his stupidity.

"Well, she's here now."

"Indeed," Karla said, not pointing out that that was why she was here, in his office, with a damned bantha bell. "I've called to make sure Ben knows. I told Ender, who could pass the news on to Ben in person." She frowned at Anakin. "A ~~handwavy~~ to touch base might not be your worst idea ever. Are there other people you should call? Your Luke? Jaina? Tahiri?"

"I've already talked to Jaina," Anakin said. "I don't think my Luke would care -- he's only met Mara in passing so far. I'll see if Jaina wants to talk to Tahiri or if I should."

"...You called Jaina and not Ben? Or at least Ender?"

SO MUCH JUDGING, ANAKIN. SO MUCH.

Anakin had called Jaina because he'd needed the support, but he wasn't about to admit to such vulnerability to Karla.

"Fine," he said. "I'm a terrible, awful, horrible grandfather. Better now?"
