Anakin and Rory's hotel suite [morning]

Anakin and Rory had totally intended to get to the dance. There had been a new suit and a fancy dress...and then there had been the really comfortable hotel bed and a nap that was supposed to last two hours had gone on for...fourteen.

Oops.

Anakin snuggled in close to his wife, cracked open his eyes to look at the clock, and groaned. "We're so very late."

Rory was perfectly ready to respond to that, really, but instead her thoughts turned to panic.

"Why didn't Juliet wake us up?"

"Because I'm in a cage?" Juliet answered from across the room, and of course, no, it didn't come from their adorable toddler. It came from a cranky-looking girl in her early twenties, sitting cross-legged in a crib.

Anakin bolted upright in bed, letting loose a stream of Huttese curses. "Juliet?!"

"So you can swear in Huttese around Mom, but I can't?" Juliet asked, arms crossed. "Let me out of here."

"You're seeing this too, right?" he murmured at Rory and he reached into the Force to lift their daughter out of the crib.

"I'm seeing it," Rory agreed, eyebrows raised. "Juliet? Hon, you're a little bigger than the last time we saw you."

"And you're all not-wrinkly," Juliet agreed, landing safely on the ground.

"Wrinkly?" Anakin repeated. "Are you from the future?"

"Clearly, Dad. Are you new?" Juliet asked, rolling her eyes. "Mom looks younger than me. Duh."

"Is Rory younger than you?" Anakin asked a little worriedly.

"I dunno. How old are you today, Rory?" Juliet asked with a grin.

"That's 'Mom,' to you," Rory corrected. "Twenty-two."

Juliet tsked, shaking her head. "I'm a whole year younger."

Anakin whimpered. "Kriffing hells. Our baby can drink."

"And drive. And fly," Juliet added. With a slight pause, she saw an opportunity, and added, "And help Luke with the war...."

"Absolutely not," Anakin replied immediately.

"Why not?" Juliet asked, proving she had inherited the Skywalker whine just fine.

"Because I said so," Anakin retorted. "In two different dimensions, most likely."

"Old-you let me," she totally lied.

Anakin gave her a flat look. "Try that again, without the lying to the Jedi part of it."

"You're not the only Jedi in the room, Dad," she reminded him.

He sighed because he knew it. She was strong in the Force, with an air of control that spoke of training. "Then you should definitely know better than to try something so juvenile on me."

"And you should know how capable I am," she countered.

"I know how capable you might be," Anakin replied. "I know that yesterday you liked to paint your face with peas."

"So?" Juliet asked. "I'm twenty-one. I have a lightsaber. I can do things with it. The fact that you knew me when I was a baby is irrelevant."

"You're not running off to join Luke in his fight against the Vong this weekend," Anakin said.

"I'm an adult," Juliet pointed out. "I can do what I want."

Anakin banged his head against the headboard. "Then why haven't you gone before?"

"Mom wants me to finish school," she said, glancing at Rory apologetically.

"Then let's stick with that agreement and not try to negotiate a better one with your slightly confused young parents," Anakin replied.

"Why are you guys all young, by the way?" Juliet asked, as though it was their fault. "And where's Chris?"

"Chris?" Anakin echoed kind of stupidly.

"'Bout yay tall, dark hair, quiet?" Juliet said, gesturing about a head taller than her. "You know, your only son?"

At least she hadn't answered "my husband."

"He's not born yet," Anakin said, flopping back on the pillows with a groan.

"Weird," Juliet said, frowning. "How old am I supposed to be?"

"You were almost two yesterday," he replied.

"Twenty years," Juliet said thoughtfully. She glanced at them both, and said, "Almost two, huh? Hm. I better enjoy that last bit of time as an only child. I hope you guys spoil the hell out of me for the next year."

Anakin gave Rory a quick glance to see how she was taking that little bit of news.

"We don't spoil," he said. "We indulge."

"Indulge me a lot before Chris shows up," Juliet said, while Rory was looking straight down at her own stomach in mild panic.

"I'm pretty sure we indulge you even after Chris shows up," Anakin decided.

"You definitely don't," Juliet said, shaking her head sadly. This time she made sure to shield a little better, in the hopes it might work.

Anakin laughed at her, his sense of humor slowly returning to him. "How terrible for you! Should we fix that today? Do you still want a pony?"

"Daddy, please," Juliet said, shaking her head disparagingly. "I'm a Skywalker. I don't want a pony. Sorry Mom," she added to Rory. "No, I want a ship."

"Let me guess," Anakin replied. "You want an X-Wing."

"Duh," she said, grinning.

"I can't convince you that all the cool kids fly diplomatic shuttles?" he tried.

"Since I'm one of the cool kids, no," she replied.

Anakin grinned at her proudly. "You are?"
