Office hours [all day]

After sparring with Ben in the gym again, Anakin sat down behind his desk and closed his eyes.

He was meditating. Really. Three hours of a sleep a night was fine.

"I hadn't planned on ending up where I did either," Anakin replied.

And neither, Tahiri realized, did the Jacen she knew. Her shoulders slumped again, and she asked, "So what do I do, then? Just go on like the idea doesn't scare me?"

Anakin shook his head. "Fear leads to anger," he recited. "You have to face what you fear and move past it."

A tiny, uncertain smile crossed her lips. "I'm going to be facing a lot of things, then."

"Start with something tiny," Anakin advised. "Don't jump straight to Riina and the dark side."

The smile edged a little closer to a wry grin. "Like lifting leaves before we get to really big rocks."

"Or Star Destroyers," Anakin said. "In this case, size will matter."

Tahiri was just going to let certain humorous interpretations of that slide right on by. "Then I guess I should get to work on that."

"Make sure to check in with someone," Anakin warned. "It's an internal struggle, but you shouldn't feel completely isolated."

"I will," Tahiri promised. "Can I check in with you sometimes?"

"I'd be upset if you didn't," Anakin replied.

"And I'd like to keep making you upset to a minimum." It wasn't quite up to her usual level of joking, but for about a fraction of a second, she managed to smile.

"Smart girl," Anakin said with an answering smile.

Tahiri's smile was -- crooked was an understatement. But it was there. "I'm trying to be."

"The future is constantly in motion," Anakin said softly. "Nothing is certain."

Tahiri thought of Jaina and the whole Sword of the Jedi thing that hadn't happened in her timeline yet, of Anakin and Ben and the names they had to live up to, and suddenly she was very, very glad to just be an ordinary, unimportant Jedi with none of that hanging over her head.

"All I can say is I'll do my best, Master Skywalker," she said lamely.

"That's all anyone can ask," Anakin said. "Off you go now."

Tahiri gulped, nodded, and . . . yeah, pretty much fled without another word.
