Office hours [all day]

The baby was due any day now, which meant Anakin was a barely containable ball of stress. He was holding office hours so he didn't drive his wife completely insane, but his planned activity for the day seemed to be staring at his comlink and waiting for it to go off.

Neurotic, party of one, probably needed a distraction.

Veronica felt bad about not making the baby shower, so she dropped by Anakin's office with a gift.

"Hey, you busy?" she asked.

Anakin smiled. "Not really," he said. "Come on in."

"You didn't have to get anything," Anakin insisted as he peeked into the bag. "Really."

He pulled out the clothing and smiled. "Hard to believe how small this stuff is, huh?"

"It's fun to buy baby stuff," Veronica told him. "And, yeah, it really is. But it's sooooo cute."

See? She could be a girl sometimes.

"You should see the pairs of socks," Anakin said, grinning doofily. "It's our life, so half of them will be hidden by Vladdie or eaten by the monster in the linen closet, but still! Thank you."

"You're welcome," Veronica said. "You have an actual monster in your linen closet?"

Anakin chuckled. "When River graduated, she left me Bertie, the monster who used to live under her bed."

"... of course," Veronica said, shaking her head. "Only this place."

"Exactly," Anakin replied, still laughing. "Adding a baby to the chaos won't be that difficult."

Oh, idealistic Anakin, how little you know.

Veronica had no experience with babies, so she was just going to nod and smile. "It should be any day now, right?"

"She's due on Sunday," Anakin said, glancing again at the comlink. "She promised to call if anything starts happening."

"I'm sure everything will be fine," Veronica said.

Anakin didn't look remotely convinced. "I don't like the medical practices on this planet," he declared. "It's primitive."

"Rory's young and healthy," Veronica said. "And, you know, Piper's son can heal, so if anything weird happens, call me."

Padmé had been, too, but Anakin was not sharing anything about that with anyone. Ah, so healthy.

"I'll remember," he said, nodding. "How are you settling in as an authority figure?" he asked, changing the subject.

"It seems to be going pretty well, I think," Veronica said. "My class is small, but they are all good kids."

"That's always a nice surprise," Anakin said. "I generally get at least one attitude problem a class."

"Hey," Gibbs said knocking at the door, "Got a minute?"

"Of course," Anakin said, glancing away from a Wikipedia article about childbirth. "Come in."

"Do you know anything about Ben being involved in any interrogations?" Gibbs asked.

Anakin blinked. "Nothing specific," he said finally. "I know he was part of the secret police at home, so I assume he would have had some access. Why?"

"Yesterdab he asked not to participate in class," Gibbs replied evenly. "Kid seemed to think that interrogating meant the same thing as torture. He even mentioned watching someone die in front of him. I thought as family you might want to look into it."

"Definitely," Anakin said, frowning hard. "Getting him to open up is like talking to a rock sometimes."
